Telets was Khan of Bulgaria between 762 and 765
Telets was from the Ugain clan. The Byzantium’s historians note that he became khan on the place of the rightful heir. That leads us to believe that his accession was the next in a long line of violent changes on the top.
His rule gave voice to the part of the nobility that was against incorporating Slavs in the ruling apparatus of the country. After he became a Khan several Slavic tribes left Bulgaria and sought protection in Byzantium.
Telets was a young man (30 years old), who was known for being brave and a risk taker. He put those quality in good use by undertaking several raids in Byzantium’s territory. On the 16th of June 763 Constantine V Copronymus led his army out of Constantinople on a campaign against this new treat. His 800 ships were carrying 12 horse mounted solders each. The fleet was given the task to go in to the Danube and attack and plunder the Bulgarian cities while the emperor’s army opened a second front in Trace. He stopped and near Anchialo. Meanwhile Telets who had 20000 Slavs at his side plus the regular Bulgarian army prepared to wait out the Byzantine forces in the narrow passes of the Balkan Mountain. Unfortunately he rushed to fight Constantine V on the fields near Anhialo on the 30th (Thursday). The fight begun at 10 am. Sources say that both sides were very determined and that in the long battle many fell from both sides. What probably determined the outcome was the Slavs switching sides and siding with Constantine’s army. The Bulgarian army had no choice but to retreat. Many Bulgarians were captured, chained and led to the capital to be given to the crowds.
After the defeat at Anhialo Telts’ destiny was sealed. He was killed together with all of his family and supporters.
