This is a list of Old Tropical Cyclone Names.
North Atlantic
North Atlantic Ocean storms are named by the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Currently, six lists are rotated every six years.
Names Retired from Current Lists
These names have been retired from the currently-used lists of hurricane names for being particularly deadly or destructive. Additional names have also been retired from the lists below, and are noted there. These names will never again be used for tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic and have been replaced by new names on the current lists of hurricane names.
Names effective 1971-1978
Introduced in 1971, these lists were to be rotated every ten years. They remained in use only through 1978, when a new set of six lists containing both male and female names was adopted, to begin the following year. Consequently, the lists for 1979 and 1980 were never used. Note also that Neutercanes (Subtropical cyclone) were named for 1972 and 1973 and have different name lists.

Female names are used and names starting in X and Y are only added in 1954 (and removed in 1956 along with Q and U names). From 1955 there is no permanent set list and new names are drawn up every year. This continued until 1959, when a semi-permanent list of four became effective in 1960.

South Atlantic
No tropical cyclones are officially named in this region. The only recorded hurricane in the South Atlantic was called Hurricane Catarina by Brazilian meteorologists after Santa Catarina province where it made landfall. Some also called it Hurricane Aldonca to match the pattern used in the North Atlantic of naming hurricanes alphabetically.
North Pacific east of 140W
Eastern Pacific Hurricane are named by the National Hurricane Center.
Names effective 1978
Four lists are rotated for four years. However only list 1 is used as the current list for this basin became effective in 1979.

Japan
In the Japanese press, numbers are preferred to names. Typhoon names fell out of general use after the end of the US occupation. Typhoons are numbered successively each year. So Typhoon Mawar, which made landfall over Tokyo in August 2005, was known locally as taifuu 11. In scientific use this is combined with a year number (T0511 for the eleventh typhoon of 2005). Official documents use the year in the Japanese calendar (Heisei 17 taifuu 11). In addition eight especially significant typhoons were named according to the area where they caused most damage.[1]
