Introduction

Princess Anne High School is the oldest high school still in existence in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Opened in 1954, the school is now one of 11 high schools in Virginia Beach. In addition to serving regularly zoned students, the school hosts a citywide center for students with moderate to severe disabilities (the West Building), the citywide International Baccalaureate program, and a citywide center for pregnant teens (The PA Center). The school is also one of only a few high schools in Virginia Beach featuring an NJROTC program.

Princess Anne High School was also ranked #143 in Newsweek's list of the top high schools in the nation 1

September, 1995 Fire

Four days before the opening of school in September, 1995 a fire destroyed approximately 1/3 of the building. The fire started in the library, and according to news reports at the time, a teacher assisted students with starting the fire. Numerous records were lost in the blaze, among them the entire collection of PA yearbooks before 1995 and numerous printed and digital course materials teachers had collected during their careers.

For the whole 1995-1996 school year and the fall semester of the 1996-1997 school year, classes were held at Celebration Station on Virginia Beach Boulevard, a vacant shopping mall. A Home Depot now stands at the site at the corner of Virginia Beach Blvd. and Little Neck Rd. in Virginia Beach. Buses transported students between Celebration Station and portable classrooms on PA's main campus.

After the fire, the 900 hall (which had been under construction prior to the fire) opened in January 1996. Meanwhile, the hall parallel to and facing Virginia Beach Blvd., the 200 hall, was entirely rebuilt, as was the library. As a result of the fire, the PA library has one of the most extensive and up-to-date collections of any Virginia Beach high school. A new wing for art classes and studios was also opened behind the administrative offices.

The school reopened in January 1997 and a dedication was held May 4, 1997.
