2004 Golden Nica for Digital Communities: The top award handed out by the Prix Ars Electronica cyberarts festival; this was the inaugural year for this category, and saw 2 of the 7 Golden Nicas handed out. Includes: public appearances at ceremonies in New York and Linz, Austria; 10,000 Euros; and perhaps an opportunity to lecture about the project in Linz. 2004 Web Creation Award for Japanese Wikipedia: The special prize awarded by Web Advertising Bureau in Japan Advertisers Association which is the Association of biggest marketing offices and mass media in Japan;


The Award is principally given for individuals who has achived great contribution on the World Wide Web in Japanese although, Wikipedia's activities impressed the judging committee of the Award, and made them honor Wikipedia with a exceptionally given special prize. The ceremony was held on September 9 in Tokyo and two wikipedians attended who have contributed since the early days of Japanese Wikipedia and were also interviewed by judges in advance.

Grimme Online Award 2005

2005: In Germany Wikipedia won the Grimme Online Award in the category "knowledge and education" together with a special price of the audience. Grimme Online Award is the Online counterpart of "Adolf-Grimme-Award" - the most important German television award.
Two months later, Wikipedia won the Digital Lifestyle Award in the category "Internet Community" bestowed at IFA consumer electronics fair. [1] [2] (German)

Linux Jounal's Editors' Choice Award 2005

Wikipedia wins the Linux Journal Editors' Choice Award for the best Nontechnical or Community Website. While the article itself is dated 2005-06-30, it appeared in the August 2005 edition of Linux Journal.
First sentence of relevant part: Robert Love calls Wikipedia, "probably the single greatest thing on Earth."

  • 14 December 2005: The Italian Wikipedia has won two awards at the "Premio WWW" (Price WWW) organized by Il sole 24 ore. First award in the category "Education and Work" (... for being the new benchmark in Italy for online knowledge.), and a Special Award for "Internet Educational", assigned in collaboration with the italian Ministry of Technology and Innovation (... because it's a free encyclopedia, born from a collective intelligence that exalts the sharing of knowledge and its free access. Wikipedia is a source of information in constant change that allows to outpace the staticity of traditional paper encyclopedias, and is subjected to a constant work of monitoring/revision made by its users.

Prix Ars Electronica awards 2005

WikiCommons also got the honorary prize at the 2005 Prix Ars Electronica awards.

The 100,000th file had been uploaded to our online repository of free images, sounds, and videos, the Wikimedia Commons. The young project received additional encouragement and recognition on Monday in the form of an honorary mention at the 2005 Prix Ars Electronica awards. More details are in the press release.
