WWE Wrestlemania XIX fu la diciannovesima edizione dell'annuale pay-per-view (PPV) WrestleMania di wrestling professionistico, promosso dalla World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Si tenne il 30 marzo 2003 al Safeco Field di Seattle, Washington[1]. Fu la prima la prima volta che un'edizione di WrestleMania si svolse nello stato di Washington. In occassione dell'evento, si stabilì un record il record di presenze al Safeco Field, grazie ai 54.097 biglietti venduti in tutto il mondo, pari ad un ricavato di quasi 3 milioni di dollari[2].

WrestleMania XIX fu la prima edizione di Wrestlemania ad essere promossa sotto il nome WWE, dopo il cambio legale di nome della federazione da World Wrestling Federation (WWF), e la prima ad aver avuto luogo dopo la cosidetta WWE Brand Extension. Il pay-per-view, infatti, ha visto coinvolti atleti del roster sia di RAW che di SmackDown!. La tagline di WrestleMania XIX fu "Dare To Dream" ("Il coraggio di sognare"), mentre la colonna sonora dell'evento fu Crack Addict dei Limp Bizkit. Il gruppo si esibì dal vivo durante l'evento, suonando la stessa Crack Addict e Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle) durante l'entrata di The Undertaker.

Il match principale dell'evento, per quanto riguarda il roster si SmackDown!, fu quello valevole per il WWE Championship tra il campione Kurt Angle e lo sfidante Brock Lesnar, vinto da quest'ultimo per schienamento dopo l'esecuzione di un F-5. L'incontro, tra l'altro, fu anche il main event dello show[3]. Per quanto riguarda il roster di RAW, invece, il match principale dell'evento fu quello valevole per il World Heavyweight Championship tra lo sfidante Booker T e il campione Triple H, vinto da quest'ultimo per schienamento dopo l'esecuzione di un Pedigree[4][5]. Altri match dello show furono quelli presenti nell'undercard, tra i quali Shawn Michaels contro Chris Jericho[6], Hulk Hogan contro Vince McMahon in uno Street Fight match[6] e The Rock contro "Stone Cold" Steve Austin[6][7].

Il feud principale di WrestleMania XIX, per quanto riguarda il roster di SmackDown!, fu quello tra il WWE Champion Kurt Angle e lo sfidante Brock Lesnar. Angle vinse il titolo tre mesi prima, ad Armageddon, sconfiggendo l'allora campione The Big Show con l'aiuto di Lesnar[8][9]. Alla Royal Rumble, nel mese di gennaio, Angle difese il WWE Championship dall'assalto di Chris Benoit e, la stessa sera, Lesnar vinse il Royal Rumble match dopo aver eliminato per ultimo The Undertaker, ottenendo così il diritto di sfidare il campione WWE in un match valido per il titolo nel main event di WrestleMania[10]. Il mese successivo, a No Way Out, Lesnar e Benoit sconfissero il Team Angle (Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin e Charlie Haas) in un 2 on 3 Handicap match. Inizialmente, nell'incontro era prevista anche la partecipazione di Edge al fianco di Lesnar e Benoit, ma non potè parteciparvi a causa di un infortunio al collo[11][12]. Nella puntanta di SmackDown! del 6 marzo, Lesnar sconfisse Paul Heyman in uno Steel Cage match, dopo il quale ottenne il diritto di poter anticipare la sfida con Angle per il WWE Championship già la settimana successiva, invece che disputarla a WrestleMania[13][14]. La settimana successiva, dunque, Lesnar affrontò Angle a SmackDown! per il titolo WWE, ma venne sconfitto da quest'ultimo in modo scorretto[15][16]. Prima dell'inizio del match, Kurt, che stava "pregando" in un angolo del ring, infatti, si scambiò con suo fratello Eric [15][16]. Poco dopo, entrò Lesnar e l'incontro ebbe inizio. Durante il match, intervennero Benjamin e Haas a bordo ring e distrassero Lesnar, dando il tempo a Kurt di riscambiarsi con Eric[15][16]. Quando Lesnar riacquistò l'attenzione sul ring, per Kurt fu un gioco da ragazzi sorprendere l'avversario con un semplice schienamento a culla[15][16]. La settimana successiva, nella puntata di SmackDown! del 20 marzo, la General Manager dello show, Stephanie McMahon, stabilì che Lesnar avrebbe comunque avuto il suo match contro Angle per il WWE Championship a WrestleMania e aggiunse che, in caso il campione avesse cercato di farsi squalificare o avesse fatto intervenire qualche alleato, avrebbe perso il titolo per cederlo allo sfidante[17][18].

Per quanto riguarda il roster di RAW, invece, il feud principale dell'evento fu quello tra il World Heavyweight Champion Triple H e lo sfidante Booker T. Triple H vinse il titolo tre mesi prima, ad Armageddon, sconfiggendo l'allora campione Shawn Michaels in un 3 Stages of Hell match[19][20]. Dopo aver vinto il titolo, Triple H lo dovette difendere dagli attacchi di Scott Steiner, durante i due successivi pay-per-view (Royal Rumble e No Way Out). Alla Royal Rumble, Triple H si fece squalificare volontariamente dopo aver colpito in modo violento Steiner con uno Sledgehammer, mantendo comunque per regolamento il titolo. A No Way Out, invece, Triple H sconfisse Steiner per schienamento, mantenendo nuovamente il titolo. Nella puntata di RAW del 24 febbraio, Booker T vinse una 20-man Battle Royal dopo aver eliminato per ultimo The Rock, diventando il primo contendente per il World Heavyweight Championship a WrestleMania[21][22]. La settimana successiva, nella puntata di RAW del 3 marzo, Triple H si rese protagonista di un controverso promo nei confronti di Booker T. Il World Heavyweight Champion iniziò a minimizzare sul fatto che nella World Championship Wrestling (WCW) Booker T avesse conquistato il WCW Championship per ben cinque volte, sottolineando come tale cintura fosse stata detenuta anche da non-lottatori come Vince Russo e l'attore David Arquette. Triple H, inoltre, arrivò a definire Booker T come un criminale condannato, che non sarebbe mai riuciti a vincere un titolo nella WWE. Nello specifico, il campione pronunciò la frase "people like you" ("gente come te"), che fu erroneamente intesa come razzista, essendo Booker T di origine afroamericana. La WWE giustificò l'accaduto specificando come con quella frase, in realtà, Triple H si stesse riferendo al fatto che riteneva il suo sfidante di WrestleMania non all'altezza per poter conquistare il World Heavyweight Championship, così come gli altri lottatori che avevano in passato cercato di strappargli il titolo senza successo. Tuttavia, secondo molti, Triple H avrebbe volontariamente creato questo malinteso, sapendo l'Heat che avrebbe potuto provocare[23]. Per vendicarsi dell'accaduto, Booker T attacò Triple H due settimana dopo a RAW, aggredendolo prima nei bagni degli spogliatoi, per poi finirlo sopra al ring[24]. La settimana successiva, nella puntata di RAW del 24 marzo, Booker T si ripetette, sconfiggendo lo stesso Triple H e Ric Flair in un Tag team match in coppia con Goldust.

Il feud secondario del roster di SmackDown! fu quello tra Hulk Hogan e il Vince McMahon, il Chairman della WWE. Tutto iniziò a No Way Out, quando McMahon intervenne nel corso di un match tra Hogan e The Rock, passando una sedia d'acciaio a quest'ultimo mentre l'arbitro era distratta, con la quale The Rock colpì Hogan ed effettuò lo schienamento vincente ai suoi danni[25][26]. Nella puntata di SmackDown! del 6 marzo, McMahon spiegò il suo gesto affermando come odiasse Hogan, principalmente per due precisi motivi: per aver lasciato tempo fa la WWE (ai tempi nota come WWF) per accasarsi alla rivale WCW di Ted Turner e per aver testimoniato contro di lui nel processo per steroidi in cui la federazione fu coinvolta nei primi anni anni novanta. McMahon concluse sfidando Hogan a un match contro di lui a WrestleMania, dove se Hulk avrebbe perso, si sarebbe dovuto ritirare per sempre dal wrestling professionistico. Hogan decise di accettare la sfida la notte stessa[13][14]. Due settimane dopo, nella puntata di SmackDown! del 20 marzo, Hogan e McMahon dovettero firmare il contratto per il loro match a WrestleMania. Nel momento in cui Hogan si apprestò a firmare, McMahon lo attacò da dietro con una sedia d'acciaio. McMahon continuò a colpire Hogan con la sedia d'acciaio più volte, fino a farlo sanguinare. Il Chairman firmò poi il contratto, costrigendo Hogan, invece, a firmare con il suo stesso sangue[17][18].

Per quanto riguarda il roster di RAW, invece, il feud secondario dell'evento fu quello tra The Rock e "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Nella puntata di SmackDown! del 20 febbraio, The Rock tornò alla WWE, dopo un'assenza dal mondo del wrestling di circa sei mesi (da SummerSlam). Qualche giorno dopo, The Rock dovette combattere un match contro Hulk Hogan a No Way Out, in quello che fu un rematch di WrestleMania X8. A No Way Out, The Rock sconfisse Hogan con l'aiuto di Vince McMahon. La notte seguente, nella puntata di RAW del 24 febbraio, The Rock prese parte a una 20-man Battle Royal, che avrebbe determinato lo sfidante per il World Heavyweight Championship di Triple H a WrestleMania[21][22]. Tuttavia, The Rock non riuscì a vincere l'incontro, venendo eliminato per ultimo da Booker T. Dopo il match, The Rock iniziò a criticare la scelta dei fans della WWE di aver votato Steve Austin come "superstar del decennio" nel mese di gennaio; Austin la prese male e, dunque, ebbe iniziò la rivalità tra i due[21][22]. Come The Rock, anche lo stesso Austin aveva avuto una lunga pausa dal mondo del wrestling prima di tornare a combattere a No Way Out, dove riuscì a sconfiggere senza tanti problemi il General Manager di RAW, Eric Bischoff[11][12]. La settimana successiva, nnella puntata di RAW del 3 marzo, Austin tenne un promo di ringraziamento ai fans della WWE per averlo votato come "superstar del decennio" e infierì anche contro The Rock, dicendo che la sua era solamente gelosia per non aver ricevuto questo stesso riconosciemento dal pubblico. Austin fu, però, poi interroto da The Rock, che lo sfidò ad un match a WrestleMania. Lo stesso The Rock, infatti, era ossessionato dal fatto che non era mai riuscito a battere Austin in tale evento, avendo già perso contro di lui a WrestleMania XV e a WrestleMania X-Seven[27][28]. La settimana successiva, nella puntata di RAW del 10 marzo, The Rock, che inizialmente avrebbe dovuto affrontare Booker T, invece, scelse di combattere contro The Hurricane, essendo sicuro di ottenere una vittoria decisamente molto più facile[29][30]. Mentre i due combattevano, Austin si presentò nell'arena iniziando a farsi strada per la rampa d'ingresso al ring. Vedendo arrivare il rivale, The Rock si distrase e The Hurricane ne approfittò per sorprendere l'avversario con un improvviso schienamento a culla[29][30]. La settimana successiva, nella puntata di RAW del 24 marzo, la WWE vietò ad Austin l'ingresso nell'arena per quella notte, temendo una nuova rissa con The Rock a pochi giorni dal loro match di WrestleMania[31][32]. Nonostante ciò, Austin riuscì ad eludere la sorveglianza e a entrare comunque nell'arena per attacare sul ring The Rock, che però riuscì a scappare prima che Austin raggiungesse il ring, rimandando la sfida a WrestleMania[31][32].

Un altro feud del roster di RAW, anche se d'importanza minore rispetto agli altri, fu quello tra Chris Jericho e Shawn Michaels. Inizialmente, Jericho si rivelò fan e amico di Shawn, dichiarando allo stesso Michaels di averlo ammirato fin da giovane e di essersi ispirato a lui per diventare wrestler. Michaels gradì molto le parole di Jericho, rispondendogli che anche lui nutriva grande stima e ammirazione nei suoi confronti. Tra i due nacque, così, una grande amicizia. La dimostrazione di ciò si ebbe alla Royal Rumble, nel corso del Royal Rumble match. Michaels e Jericho, infatti, entrati nel match rispettivamente come primo e secondo, decisero inizialmente di allearsi per eliminare gli altri avversari, per poi rimanere solamente loro due e giocarsi lealmente la vittoria finale. Qui, però, accadde un incredibile tradimento di Jericho ai danni di Michaels: mentre Shawn era sul punto di eliminare dal match Christopher Nowinski, venne clamorosamente attacato alle spalle da Jericho, che lo gettò fuori dal ring eliminandolo. Michaels, infuriato e stupito al tempo stesso, dovette tornare negli spogliatoi, mentre Jericho proseguì tranquillamente il match. Qualche minuto dopo, altro colpo di scena, Michaels risalì irregolarmente sul ring, distraendo Jericho, che si fece eliminare da Test. Michaels e Jericho iniziarono, dunque, a picchiarsi ferocemente anche fuori dal quadrato, fino a quando non vennero divisi dalla sicurezza e riportati separatamente negli spogliatoi forzatamente[33]. I due continuarono ad attacarsi regolarmente l'uno con l'altro, sia verbalmente che fisicamente, nelle settimane di RAW successive. Vedendo che la situazione era ormai diventata ingestibile, Eric Bischoff si vide costretto a sancire un match tra i due a WrestleMania.

L'evento

Before the event aired live on pay-per-view, Chief Morley and Lance Storm defeated Kane and Rob Van Dam via pinfall to retain the World Tag Team Championship in a taping of Sunday Night Heat.[6][34] As the event began, Ashanti sang a rendition of "America the Beautiful".[35][36] The first match that aired was a Cruiserweight Championship match between Rey Mysterio and the champion, Matt Hardy.[6][37] The match began with back and forth action between the two wrestlers, until Hardy hit a Twist of Fate that got a near pinfall on Mysterio.[35][36] Mysterio however, retaliated by hitting a 619 on Hardy, but as Mysterio delivered a West coast pop, Hardy ducked into a Roll-up that saw Hardy use the ring ropes for leverage and successfully pinned Mysterio, thus Hardy retained the Cruiserweight Championship.[36][38][39]

The next match was a tag team match between the team of The Undertaker and Nathan Jones against the team of The Big Show and A-Train.[6] It was then announced that The Undertaker would have to face both Show and Train in a Handicap match.[37][38] Both Show and Train had the advantage of The Undertaker in the beginning of the match, however late into the match, Jones entered the match and attacked Show, which allowed The Undertaker to deliver a Tombstone piledriver on A-Train into a successful pinfall, thus The Undertaker won the match and remained undefeated at WrestleMania.[36][38][39]

The third match was a Triple threat Women's Championship match, between Jazz, Trish Stratus, and the champion, Victoria.[6][37] Throughout the match, Jazz and Victoria would double team Stratus and Steven Richards, who was at ringside in Victoria's corner, would intervene in the match.[36][39] As Jazz was thrown over the top rope onto ringside, however, Richards entered the ring with a steel chair and attempted to hit Stratus with it but missed and hit it off the ropes, allowing Stratus to do the Stratus Faction on him. Victoria attempted the widow's peak on Stratus who got out of it and hit Victoria with a chick kick, that led to a successful pinfall, thus Stratus won the match and the Women's Championship, tying the official number of reigns set by The Fabulous Moolah.[36][38][39]

The next match was a triple threat Tag Team Championship match between the team of Rhyno and Chris Benoit, against the team of Los Guerreros (Chavo and Eddie Guerrero), and the champions, Team Angle (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas).[6][37] A non-stop action match, as all competitors participated in the match.[38][39] Rhyno delivered a Gore on Chavo, however, where Benjamin tagged himself into the match and successfully pinned Chavo, thus Team Angle won the match and retained the Tag Team Championship.[35][36][38]

The fifth match was the encounter of Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels.[6][37] Jericho had the advantage over Michaels in the beginning of the match, as he early on applied the Walls of Jericho onto Michaels.[35][38] Late into the match, Michaels attempted to hit Jericho with Sweet chin music, however, Jericho countered it into a Walls of Jericho.[36][38] After Michaels freed himself from Jericho's submission hold, Jericho attempted a suplex that Michaels countered into a roll-up that gave Michaels a successful pinfall, thus Michaels won the match.[35][36][39]

 
The Rock vs. Steve Austin

Before the next match begun, a pillow fight took place between the team of Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson against the team of the Miller Lite catfight girls (Tanya Ballinger and Kitana Baker), which went to a no contest.[35][38] The next match was a World Heavyweight Championship match between Booker T and the champion, Triple H (HHH).[6][37] The match began with Booker in control of the match over HHH, however, Ric Flair, who was at ringside in HHH's corner, tossed Booker's knee into the ringside steel steps.[35][38] The attack allowed HHH to work over Booker's leg, as he applied various submission holds onto Booker's leg including the Indian deathlock.[35][38] Booker however retaliated and took control of the match; after he hit HHH with a Harlem legdrop, Booker grasped his knee in pain, which allowed HHH to recover and hit Booker with a Pedigree into a successful pinfall, thus Triple H won the match and retained the World Heavyweight Championship.[35][36][39] The seventh match was a Street fight between Hulk Hogan and the WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon.[6][37] Both Hogan and McMahon tested each other's strength in the beginning of the match, until McMahon tossed Hogan onto ringside.[40] Hogan then countered a chairshot by McMahon into several of his own, that caused McMahon to bleed from the head.[35][40] Late into the match, Roddy Piper interfered in the match as he hit Hogan with a pipe.[36][40] Hogan however, later retaliated by hitting McMahon with a Big boot into a Leg drop and successfully pinned McMahon, thus Hogan won the match.[38][39][40]

The next, and final match on the undercard, was the encounter of The Rock and Steve Austin.[6][37] The match began with Austin and Rock brawling in the ring, which ended up at ringside.[35][40] Throughout the match, Rock worked over Austin's leg, which included Rock applying a Sharpshooter on Austin.[36][38] Rock then began to taunt Austin, as he put on his vest and imitated his taunts, which led to The Rock running into a Rock Bottom by Austin.[39][40] Rock then retaliated by hitting Austin with a Stone Cold stunner.[38][39] After he failed to pin Austin with the People's elbow, Rock then hit Austin with three Rock Bottoms that led to the Rock successfully pinning Austin, thus The Rock won the match.[35][39][40]

The main event was a WWE Championship match between Brock Lesnar and the champion, Kurt Angle.[6][37] The match began with Lesnar and Angle wrestling back and forth, until Angle countered a shoulder block into a German suplex.[35][38] Lesnar would then attempt to retaliate by attempting to F-5 Angle, however, Angle countered it into an Ankle lock, that Lesnar was able to escape out of.[36][39] As Lesnar escaped, Angle would attempt to deliver an Angle slam, however, Lesnar countered it into an F-5.[36][40] Instead of covering Angle, Lesnar climbed to the top rope and hit a botched Shooting star press on Angle, which Angle covered for by going for the pin attempt and getting a two count.[35][38] After Lesnar kicked out, Angle picked up Lesnar only to be hit with another F-5, Lesnar then successfully pinned Angle, winning the match and the WWE Championship.[41][42][43]
