The Keweenaw Peninsula is the most northern part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge spanning the small canal that separates the cities of Houghton on the south side and Hancock on the north. Although commonly called a peninsula, the bulk of the "peninsula" is technically an island called "Copper Island" (or "Kuparisaari" by the Finnish settlers) as the 1860s completion of the Keweenaw Waterway separated the area north of Portage Lake from the mainland.[1]
