Des Moines (in lingua francese "Dei Monaci") è la capitale dello Stato dell'Iowa. Entò a far parte degli Stati Uniti il 22 settembre 1851 col nome di Fort Des Moines, fino a che fu abbreviato in "Des Moines" nel 1857[1]. Des Moines è anche capoluogo della contea di Polk. In base al censimento del 2000 la popolazione della città era di 198.682 abitanti.
