The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania is one of the world's leading business schools. The Wharton School has produced founders and leaders of the world’s top companies, the heads of state, Nobel Prize winners, a U.S. Supreme Court justice, astronauts and ambassadors.

History

Joseph Wharton founded the school in 1881 as the first collegiate business school in the United States. Regarded as an innovator and visionary, his purpose was to "impart a liberal education in all matters concerning finance and economy." Wharton published the first business textbooks, established the first research center at a business school, created the first center for entrepreneurship, created the first program in international management, established the first MBA in health care and real estate, and developed first executive education program. To this day, it is regarded as one of the world's leading business and management schools, and employs the world's largest, most cited faculty with 304 standing and associate members. Wharton is recognized around the world for its innovative leadership and broad academic strengths across every major discipline and at every level of business education. As of 2005, Wharton offers programs in Accounting, Business and Public Policy, Finance, Health Care Systems, Insurance and Risk Management, Legal Studies and Business Ethics, Management, Marketing, Operations and Information Management, Real Estate, and Statistics. The school has approximately 2,320 undergraduate and 1,671 MBA and doctoral students, and an alumni network of more than 80,000 in 139 countries around the world.

The School owns the Wharton School Publishing which publishes business books and management tools in multiple formats – books, audio, electronically – to fit the learning preferences of every reader.

Rankings

The Wharton School's undergraduate business program has consistently been ranked #1 by US News (since 1987). It is also consistently ranks among the top MBA programs in the world. It has been ranked #1 by Business Week (since 1992) and The Financial Times (since 1999). In 2004 Wharton's ranking dropped to #5 in Business Week but continued to hold #1 position in Financial Times and USnews.

Since 2005, Wharton has enacted a policy of declining to actively participate in the rankings of business school programs. They, along with Harvard Business School, cited concerns for alumni and students' privacy as well as beliefs that the survey might interfere with the school's own efforts to survey them. As such, they have been removed entirely from several major MBA rankings.
