Web Open Font Format
Il Web Open Font Format (WOFF) è un formato per font utilizzato nelle pagine WEB. E' stato sviluppato nel corso del 2009 ed è in corso di standardizzazione come formato raccomandato dal World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
È fortemente raccomandato per la standardizzazione del WEB da parte del Consorzio W3c[1]. In seguito alla proposta di WOFF per la standardizzazione da parte di Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software ASA e Microsoft nell'aprile 2010[2], il Consorzio W3C ha commentato che si aspetta che WOFF diventi presto il "solo formato interoperabile" supportato da tutti i browser[3].
Specifiche
WOFF è essenzialmente un contenitore di font basati su spline (formati TrueType, TTF, OpenType o Open Font) che sono stati compressi usando un tool di codifica WOFF in modo da incorporarli in una pagina web[4].
Il formato utilizza la compressione zlib (specificamente, la funzione compress2)[4], permettendo di ottenere una tipica riduzione della dimensione del file di un TTF di oltre il 40%[5].
Supporto dei produttori
Il formato ha ricevuto l'appoggio di molti dei principali creatori di font[6], ed è supportato in Firefox sin dalla versione 3.6[7].
Nell'ottobre 2009 Microsoft ha dichiarato che stava considerando di supportare WOFF in Internet Explorer 9[8]. Microsoft ha più tardi confermato tale supporto[9] che sarebbe stato incluso nella terza anteprima pubblica (platform preview) di Internet Explorer 9.[10].
Un WebKit di sviluppo è disponibile con supporto WOFF[11], così Google Chrome e Safari lo implementeranno nelle future versioni[12].
