Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative medicine/Infoboxes

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Mr-Natural-Health (talk | contribs) at 15:48, 10 May 2004 (=Talk Custom Messages=). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The infoboxes to be placed only in CAM articles and the custom messages to be placed only in the respective talk pages are discussed in this project page. Both of these use a specific background color (i.e., #ffcc99) that uniquely identifies our Wikiproject.

The most visible impact upon Wikipedia by our Wikiproject will be the display of our infoboxes and custom messages. The Infoboxes should be displayed in the CAM articles. While the Custom messages should be placed in the CAM talk pages. Any editor may place them in appropriate articles.

Our public participants will place yet a second custom message on the talk pages of the CAM articles that have been audited by our project. This box will state whether or the not the article passed or failed our rating process the last time the article was formally reviewed. It will, also, contain a link to a database with the last review date, the rating score, which editor rated the article, and possibly notes.

Our Infoboxes

This Wikiproject cannot be referred to in our infoboxes on the article side. This is because the public is not supposed to be made aware of our project. The project infobox should be placed in CAM articles after the first introduction paragraph and before the third paragraph in articles primarily about CAM and at the bottom of the page in articles only tangentially about CAM. If there is a picture or graphic on the right side of the page, the infobox should be displayed immediately below this image. You do not want the infobox on top of the article, so that you wont mess up the definitional paragraphs. Placement on top could be construed as a form of advocacy or as an aggressive attempt to take over an article.

Primary version of the infobox

Homeopathy
This article is part of the branches of CAM series.

Template:CamMenu

The far right is an example of the floating right infobox to be placed in the Homeopathy article. It is an example of our primary infobox. There is only one option.

This version of our infobox is just for the Branches of Alternative Medicine (which covers the area of fully developed systems of alternative medicine or specific alternative methods of treatment or therapy). A few branches, however, are not just about CAM; like the articles on astrology, cognitive behavior therapy, and hypnosis. For these article exceptions, you should be using our project namespace {{CamBottom}}.

Secondary version of the infobox

Benedict Lust
This article is part of the famous people in CAM series.
Template:CamMenu

The near right is an example of the floating right infobox to be placed in the Benedict Lust article. It is an example of the secondary version of our infobox. The possible options are as follows.

  • This article is part of the philosophy of CAM series of articles.
  • This article is part of the history of CAM series of articles.
  • This article is part of the famous people in CAM series of articles.

For articles on the philosophy of CAM (which covers the very broad area of alternative positions on health, healing, and illness) or for famous people in CAM that are very strongly related to our topic you should be using the second version of our infobox. Examples would be Lifestyle diseases for a philosophy of article. And, Samuel Hahnemann as a representative founder of a branch of CAM called homeopathy. For a person like Frances Wright who did many different things in her lifetime use the project namespace {{CamBottom}}. For a philosophy article like wellness that really should be totally about CAM, but is currently laced with a lot of scientific stuff you should be using the project namespace {{CamBottom}} until the article receives a major re-write.

Article series boxes

Our article series boxes are navigation aids, which are officially called a custom element, are somewhat unique in that they utilize lists rather the usual listing of specific articles.

Primary article series box

Our primary article series box will appear inside our Wikiproject infoboxes that will be displayed on most of the CAM participating articles. This box appears below in the center of the page.

Template:CamMenu

This {{msg:CamMenu}} articles series box can be maintained at MediaWiki:CamMenu. This box is designed so that it will displayed centered inside of another table or infobox.

In general, nobody should be using this articles series box in articles other than in:

  1. Alternative medicine;
  2. Terms and concepts in alternative medicine;
  3. Philosophy of alternative medicine;
  4. Branches of alternative medicine;
  5. Famous people in alternative medicine;
  6. History of alternative medicine; and
  7. Index of Topics in Alternative Medicine.

It can also be put into a table on the talk pages of our participants.

Secondary article series box

Immediately below is our secondary article series box for articles that are tangentially about CAM. Template:CamBottom

This {{msg:CamBottom}} box is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamBottom.

Our secondary article series box is designed for articles about CAM and at least one other topic, or for articles claimed by another Wikiproject. It is, also, for articles where you don't want to make a lot of noise. This article series box is, also, perfect for those editors who cannot deal with customizing our infoboxes. This custom element should be viewed as a more complete replacement for those See also link lists which are often seen at the bottom of many articles.

This easy to use article series box can be displayed on the very bottom of articles by any editor.

Talk Custom Messages

This Wikiproject is allowed to refer editors in our custom messages on the talk side to the existence of our Wikiproject on Alternative Medicine. So, we will promote our Wikiproject, and thus our goals, just on the talk pages.

Talk namespace

Below is our {{msg:CamNotice}} custom message which is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamNotice. This project notice should be displayed on top of all the talk pages of the articles strongly about CAM. Template:CamNotice

This Talk {{msg:CamNotice}} Notice may be placed on the top of talk pages of articles strongly strongly about CAM by any editor.

Secondary talk namespace

Below is our latest {{msg:CamTanNotice}} custom message which is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamTanNotice. This project notice should be displayed on top of all the talk pages of the articles weakly about CAM Template:CamTanNotice

This Talk {{msg:CamTanNotice}} Notice may be placed on the top of talk pages of articles weakly about CAM by any editor.

In other words, where ever our project namespace is used in an article our corresponding secondary talk namespace belongs on the respective talk page.

Audit Custom Messages

On the far right is an example of the floating right Quality of Standards Review custum message for CAM articles that failed to pass its last review by our public participants. Template:CamFailed

This is our {{msg:CamFailed}} custom message which is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamFailed.

On the near right is an example of the floating right Quality of Standards Review custom message for CAM articles that passed its last review by our public participants. Template:CamPassed

This is our {{msg:CamPassed}} custom message which is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamPassed.

Special Custom Message

Below is our {{msg:CamRequiredNotice}} Infobox which is to be maintained in MediaWiki:CamRequiredNotice. Template:CamRequiredNotice

This Talk custom message should only be used on the respective talk pages of the following specific articles.

  1. Terms and concepts in alternative medicine
  2. Philosophy of alternative medicine
  3. Branches of alternative medicine
  4. Famous people in alternative medicine
  5. History of alternative medicine
  6. Index of Topics in Alternative Medicine

Instructions on how to customize our primary version of our infobox

Editors are supposed to edit this template and replace all the 'XXX's with your classifications of the article under review. The first 'XXX' should always be the name of the article. Next, all of your choices must be hyperlinked. That way the public can figure out what you are talking about by clicking on the hyperlink. Most of the possible classification options are shown below. For different cultures, you would have to figure that out yourself.

You of course need to use the messy HTML/wiki coding. But, with simple copy and paste operations it should not be that hard to do. If you edit this entire infobox project page, you can copy and then paste this entire section of possible classification options to a text file in one operation.

You should also develop and test your infobox in a sandbox, before placing it in an article. Try saving a few basic selections in your sandbox. That way, you only would have to change one or two items rather than editing the entire infobox each time you create a new infobox.

Alternately, you can simply find an infobox in an article already done that is closest to your proposed infobox. That way you would only have to change the article name, and maybe one or two other items

CAM Classifications

These classifications are used to deflect any controversy from taking place. People educated in the basic sciences take these issues very seriously, so an accurate classification will help to prevent controversy and edit wars.

  2. Mind-Body Intervention
  3. Biologically Based Therapy
  4. Manipulative Methods
  5. Energy Therapy
  1. Professionalized
  2. Self-care

  2. Protoscience - This category is reserved for branches of alternative medicine that have been shown to work, in the article, with footnotes to several published research studies.
  3. Pseudoscience - Every article should be assumed to be this by default, unless one of the other categories are better indicated.
  4. Enlightenment - Required to classify meditation.
  5. Supernatural - This category is reserved for only a few branches of alternative medicine that essentially are about religious practices, where research proving its effectiveness, if any, is not generally known to the public.
  6. N/A, or Not Applicable - And, is only used in a few articles that cover a broad area where more than one standard of knowledge is used.
  1. Western, or Western European, or Western American
  2. Eastern, or Eastern Chinese, etc.
