Football League Championship
La Football League Championship (spesso chiamata The Championship o Npower Football League Championship per ragioni di sponsorizzazione) è la seconda serie del campionato di calcio inglese. L'attuale denominazione venne introdotta nel 2004 per sostituire la First Division (Second Division fino al 1992). Rappresenta il massimo campionato della Football League. Nella stagione 2004-2005 la Football League Championship è stata il campionato cadetto più ricco d'Europa e, in generale, il 6º campionato più ricco del vecchio continente.

Formula
Si gioca in un campionato di 24 squadre, ognuna delle quali disputa 46 partite in totale. Le prime due squadre sono promosse direttamente in Premier League, insieme alla vincitrice dei play-off delle squadre dalla terza alla sesta posizione. Le ultime tre squadre sono invece retrocesse direttamente alla Football League One, cioè alla terza serie.
A parità di punteggio, le squadre sono classificate secondo i seguenti criteri:
- differenza reti
- numero di reti segnate
- scontri diretti o classifica avulsa (in caso di tre o più squadre in parità)
Eventualmente si procede a incontri di spareggio.
Diritti televisivi
I diritti televisivi per la Football League Championship sono attualmente posseduti da Sky Sports, che manterrà la possibilità di trasmettere i match fino alla stagione 2009-10. Gli highlights degli incontri del Championship e i gol dei match di League 1 e League 2 vengono mostrati da ITV. Dalle stagioni 2009-2012 Sky Sports mostrerà 65 incontri in diretta. La BBC mostrerà 10 incontri live per ogni stagione e gli highlights di tutti i match. In Australia, Fox Sports mostra in diretta i match del Coca-Cola Championship ogni fine settimana, insieme agli highlights ogni martedì sera.
Le stazioni radio locali spesso offrono la copertura radiofonica delle squadre della loro zona in ogni incontro con una diretta. La BBC Sports possiede diritti nazionali esclusivi per trasmettere gli incontri della Championship in diretta nell'intero Regno Unito; molti incontri sono commentati dalle radio locali della BBC nelle rispettive zone dei vari team, mentre alcuni titoli vengono trasmessi sulle stazioni radio nazionali. Molti incontri sono anche trasmessi on-line nel Regno Unito nel sito della BBC. In Italia, Sportitalia ha l'esclusiva per trasmettere partite e sintesi del Championship.
Storia
La prima edizione, nella stagione 2004-05, ha avuto un afflusso di spettatori di 9,6 milioni, che lo rende il quinto campionato del mondo in tal senso dopo la Premier League, la Liga spagnola, la Bundesliga tedesca e la Serie A italiana. Tuttavia supera quest’ultima se si contano anche i 200 mila spettatori dei play-off. Dalla stagione 2005-2006 le principali partite sono trasmesse anche in Italia, dal canale Sportitalia.
