Il disco

È uscito il 24 giugno 2003 negli Stati Uniti e il 23 giugno dello stesso anno in Gran Bretagna, per l'etichetta discografica Columbia Records. Contiene due dei singoli di maggior successo sulla classifica Billboard, Crazy in Love (con Jay-Z, rapper e marito della cantante) e "Baby Boy" (con Sean Paul). Altri singoli estratti sono "Naughty Girl" e "Me, Myself and I".

Secondo le parole della stessa Beyoncé, il titolo Dangerously in Love si riferisce in pratica a "tutte le fasi di una relazione sentimentale in cui una ragazza incontra un ragazzo, lo ama, lo lascia e poi si dedica a sé stessa"^[2]. Benché gran parte dell'album sia stata ultimata per l'ottobre del 2002^[3], la Columbia Records, Knowles e i suoi manager decisero di rimandare la pubblicazione al 2003, in modo che la collega Kelly Rowland, già nelle Destiny's Child, potesse avere successo con Nelly grazie al singolo "Dilemma". Knowles non apprezzò che la pubblicazione dell'album fosse stata posticipata^[4], ma alla fine accettò di tornare in studio e di ultimare la produzione insieme agli altri autori dei brani, tra cui Rich Harrison. Alla produzione fu aggiunto un tocco più retrò, in modo che Beyoncé si discostasse artisticamente dallo stile del suo gruppo di provenienza, le Destiny's Child: "Tutte le canzoni che scrivevo per le Destiny's Child erano generalmente così forti e piacevoli — ma a volte la gente perde il contatto con la tua umanità. Vorrei che la gente si accorgesse che sono sì una persona forte, ma posso anche innamorarmi, farmi male, soffrire di solitudine, sentire bisogno d'amore.".

Il successo

L'album ha debuttato al numero uno nella prima settimana su Billboard, ed è rimasto per 51 settimane ai primi 50 posti ed altre 72 ai primi 100. In Gran Bretagna è rimasto alla posizione #1 nelle prime cinque settimane, vendendo alla sua uscita 113,000 copie e rimanendo per 54 settimane nella UK Albums Chart. Knowles è la prima artista femminile, e la quinta in ordine di tempo, a piazzare singoli ("Crazy in Love") ed album al numero uno in classifica sia negli USA che in Gran Bretagna, dopo The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Rod Stewart e Men at Work. Grazie a Dangerously in Love, nel 2004 Beyoncé ha vinto cinque Grammy Awards, ed ha ottenuto più di trenta vittorie ed oltre venti nomine da altre rassegne discografiche.
