Bo' Rai Cho is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.

About Bo' Rai Cho

Bo' Rai Cho embidies the kung-fu movie archetype of a wizened master. He is portrayed as jovial, humorous, and compassionate man who teaches martial arts. He has trained many students in his time. He enjoys drinking alcoholic beverages, particularly Earthrealm's rice wine. His preferred method of fighting is Drunken Fist, which he invented.

His shortcomings are apparent, however, as he is obviously overweight. He does not hesitate to use crude tactics during battle, such as vomiting. The benign but scruffy Outworld master is revered by many for his great knowledge of martial arts and his fighting skills. What he lacks in good manners and sophistication of character, he more than makes up for with his bonhomie and good nature. But even his lesser traits, such as obesity and frequent drunkenness, become assets in battle to overcome his unsuspecting enemy. When necessary, he can prove to be a fearsome ally in times of need, even capable of commanding armies on a battlefield.

Storyline

The native Outworlder, although first introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, has been the teacher of many great warriors, including the Great Kung Lao, Shujinko, Liu Kang, Li Mei and Kung Lao. Because he is originally from Outworld, he never entered the Mortal Kombat tournament, as it would have meant competing on Outworld's behalf for the brutal emperor Shao Kahn. Instead, he used his fighting prowess to train Earthrealm warriors, without becoming directly involved until the Deadly Alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi emerged.

Upon hearing of and being saddened by the news that his student Liu Kang had been murdered, he took Kung Lao under his wing and taught him the 'whirlwind kick' technique, so that the Shaolin monk might slay Shang Tsung. Bo' Rai Cho was able to make his way to the Deadly Alliance's palace, which he secretly sneaked through until he came to the throne room. He freed and escaped with the body of Li Mei. Outside of the palace, he met Raiden and the other Earthrealm warriors. Raiden teleported him to safety before the attack on the palace.

Possible Future

The attack failed, and with Baraka's armies ever advancing, Bo' Rai Cho fell into a state of despair before being enlightened by the deceased spirit of Liu Kang. Depending upon the outcome of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Bo' Rai Cho may have led forces against Baraka's armies and gone on to defeat Baraka in battle. The facts are unknown at this time, but will be elaborated on in the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, where he is slated to make a reappearance.

Fatalities

  • Crushing Force - Bo Rai Cho takes a big step back from his dizzied opponent, and then two more. He then proceeds to run at his enemy, jumping on top of them. The impact of his immense weight splatters the opponent on the ground, and Bo' Rai Cho bounces upward to come down on them once more, destroying the remains before landing back on his feet. —Deadly Alliance
  • Uppercut Spike - Bo' Rai Cho lights a match on the ground, and takes a very large swig from his alcohol flask. He then breathes a forceful blast, sending a jet of flame onto the enemy, who disintegrates. —Deception
  • Flaming Flatulence - Bo' Rai Cho lights a match on the ground, positions it behind his rear, and blasts green flames onto his enemy, who burns to a very unpleasant death. He remarks "Ooh, that's a stinky one" or "Ooh, that was a wet one" before chuckling. —Deception
  • Inflation - In his Hara-Kiri, he somehow swells his entire body to enormous proportions and explodes. —Deception

Trivia

  • Mortal Kombat Conquest features a character named Master Cho. It is rumored that he is the prototype of Bo' Rai Cho.
  • The name Bo' Rai Cho is a wordplay on the Spanish word borracho, meaning "drunk."
  • Although praised by some for his deviation physically from the 'perfect warrior' stereotype of most other Mortal Kombat characters, his crude behavior (especially his penchance for uncontrollable flatuence) was decried by most, who saw the character as nothing more than a joke. Despite this, he is still considered to be a mid-tier character in Deadly Alliance and a high tier character in Deception.
  • His character resembles that of Sha Wujing in Journey to the West, both being martial artists and drunkards.
