Content and language integrated learning (CLIL)[1][2] is an approach for learning content through an additional language (foreign or second language), thus teaching both the subject and the language. It is an umbrella term which encompasses bilingual education, content based instruction, immersion, English (or other languages) as medium of instruction and other methodologies.[3]
Content-based instruction (CBI) is a similar approach. The term CLIL is more common in Europe, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.
CLIL has been identified as a priority by the European Commission [4] because:
"It can provide effective opportunities for pupils to use their new language skills now, rather than learn them now for use later. It opens doors on languages for a broader range of learners, nurturing self-confidence in young learners and those who have not responded well to formal language instruction in general education. It provides exposure to the language without requiring extra time in the curriculum, which can be of particular interest in vocational settings."
The European Commission has therefore decided to promote the training of CLIL teachers.[5] The European Union has also funded an education project within the Lifelong Learning programme[6], this project is called ECLIL it is developing CLIL interactive resources for European schools.
The largest program under Content and Language Integrated Learning [7] has undertaken by Espoir Technologies of India at Oxford, England and Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. A hundred-member global team of Managers, Chartered Accountants, Engineers, Doctors, Artists etc worked together for about five years to develop World's No.1 Theme-based, Interactive, language and Success enhancement Software Program. Espoir's researchers have found that the population are passionate about the following topics: Love / romance, Movies, Cricket, Success Secrets, Wit& Wisdom, Management Ideas, and Technology / Science.
