"Where the Streets Have No Name" è un brano musicale del gruppo rock irlandese degli U2, estratto dall'album The Joshua Tree.[1] Il singolo è stato pubblicato nell'agosto 1987 come terzo estratto dell'album The Joshua Tree.[2].

Il singolo è giunto alla posizione numero 13 negli Stati Uniti, alla quattordici in Canada ed alla quarta nel Regno Unito. La rivista Rolling Stone ha posizionato il brano alla ventottesima posizione della classifica "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" ("100 più grandi canzoni con chitarra di tutti i tempi").

Nel 1991, i Pet Shop Boys hanno registrato una cover del brano, pubblicata nella loro raccolta Discography, che ha ottenuto un grande successo nella sua versione in disco singolo.

Il video

Il video di "Where the Streets Have No Name" è stato diretto da Maiert Avis, ed è stato girato il 27 marzo 1987 sul tetto del Republic Liquor Store nella East 7th Street a Los Angeles. Nel video sono state incluse anche scene vere in cui la polizia cerca di far scorrere il traffico congestionato per via dell'esibizione del gruppo. Nel 1988 il video ha vinto un Grammy Award come "miglior video".[3]
Nel luglio 2010 gli U2 hanno collaborato con il Comitato Internazionale della Croce Rossa, dando vita ad una "nuova versione" del video, dove si vedono le immagini della Croce Rossa di tutto il mondo durante le operazioni.

L'11 marzo 1991 il famoso duo inglese dei Pet Shop Boys ha realizzato una propria versione del brano. Il brano è stato realizzando miscelando assieme degli elementi della famosa canzone Can't Take My Eyes off You. di Frankie Valli. Il brano, che quindi rappresenta una sorta di medley fra due canzoni, è strutturato in chiave synthpop ed è considerata da molti una versione "innovativa" del popolare brano.

Lanciata come doppio singolo assieme a How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?, il brano divenne il 15° singolo dei Pet Shop Boys ad entrare nella prestigiosa Top20 del Regno Unito (si piazzò alla posizione numero 4). In una intervista i Pet Shop Boys hanno dichiarato che il loro intento era di "trasformare una mitica canzone rock in un brano disco". Con qualche modifica alla struttura musicale e testuale della canzone originale, il duo è riuscito a ottenere un notevole successo sia critico che di classifica.

Un fatto ironico è che dopo aver ascoltato la versione dei Pet Shop Boys, Bono degli U2 ha ironicamente commentato "What have we done to deserve this?" (in italiano, "che abbiamo fatto per meritare questo?"), un chiaro riferimento al noto brano dei Pet Shop Boys What Have I Done to Deserve This?.
