Coloccini started in the youth teams of San Lorenzo de Almagro, but debuted professionally in 1998 with Boca Juniors. After playing only the last game of the Apertura championship won by Boca, he moved to A.C. Milan in 1999. 2 Seasons later was loaned to Deportivo Alavés in 2001, then to Atlético de Madrid in 2002, Villarreal CF in 2003, and after one match with Milan, he moved to Deportivo de La Coruña in 2004.
Coloccini was the center of a huge controversy between Boca Juniors and A.C. Milan since the move from one club to another wasn't agreed between the clubs. Instead, Milan arranged terms with Coloccini's father (also a former football player) and he used his parental rights to remove the child from Argentina. Later, after a bitter fight, FIFA ordered Milan to pay Boca a monetary restitution.
Coloccini was part of the Argentine youth team that won the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship, as well as part of the gold medal winning Argentine team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He also participated of the Confederations Cup 2005. In total, he played 18 games for Argentina, scoring one goal in the Confederations Cup game against Cameroon.
