Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Computer networking. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

Title

WikiProject on Computer networking

Scope

For all articles related to computer networking. Networks rely heavily on protocols and that is the primary focus, but may also include models (e.g., OSI model), hardware and applications. Like all good wikipedia articles, each computer networking article should explain the basics (what an IP address is) as well as the technical details (packet structure).

Structure

A protocol article should contain the following:

  • General description
  • History of the protocol
    • Who started it
    • When was it started
    • What revisions were there
    • Any related or defining RFCs?
  • What other protocols were kept in mind when designing this protocol? (e.g., TCP to SCTP)
  • Packet structure
  • Any related technical discussions (e.g., fragmentation and reassembly for IPv4)

A hardware article should contain the following:

  • General description
  • What is it used for (what protocols, versions, etc.)
  • Hardware features

Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
