Souderton, Pennsylvania

Souderton is a borough located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 6,730.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 6,730 people, 2,635 households, and 1,765 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,320.1/km² (6,015.7/mi²). There were 2,720 housing units at an average density of 937.7/km² (2,431.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 91.69% White, 1.00% African American, 0.19% Native American, 3.98% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 4.29% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,635 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the borough the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $47,437, and the median income for a family was $57,200. Males had a median income of $36,280 versus $28,580 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $21,758. 4.4% of the population and 3.2% of families were below the poverty line. 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. Souderton has awesome skate spots and nearby ski resorts.

Politics and government

Souderton has a city manager form of government with a mayor and a nine-member borough council. The mayor is Charles H. Allebach, Jr..

The borough is part of the Fifteenth Congressional District (represented by Rep. Charlie Dent), the 53rd State House District (represented by Rep. Robert Godshall) and the 10th State Senate District (represented by Sen. Joe Conti).
