S.H.E

S.H.E is a Taiwanese girl group that is famous in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, and other parts of Asia plus in some Asian communities around the globe. S.H.E consists of three members: Selina Ren, Hebe Tian, and Ella Chen.

Biography

On August 8, 2000, HIM International Music held a 'Universal 2000 Talent and Beauty Girl Contest' in search for new artists to be signed under their label. The contest had about 1000 contestants and after many tiring rounds of competing, seven contestants were left for the 'Cruel Stage' round. The three members of S.H.E were formed from here. Following the competition, the record company gave all seven contestants an audition. At the beginning, only one would be given a contract, but because of their incredible performance, all three of them were signed together under HIM International records. Together, they formed S.H.E with Selina Ren, Hebe Tian and Ella Chen.

Selina Ren is the actual winner of this contest. Her younger sister really wanted to join but was too young. Instead, Selina joined the contest in her place. She caught the judges' attention in the first round by singing Coco Lee's 'Before I Fall In Love' and entered the final round with no trouble with 'The Closest Stranger'. Due to her nervousness during the final round, Selina was called twice. When Selina was announced the winner, she was doubtful because there were other contestants who did not get called on.

Hebe Tian was recommended to join by the workers of the television show 'Cruel Stage'. During the first round, her voice started breaking while singing 'Return Home'. Hebe decided to sing a song with a lower key in the final round. However, because she was unfamiliar with that song, she forgot the lyrics in the finals, messing up her performance. Nonetheless, the manager appreciated her straight personality.

When Ella Chen and her younger brother went to Taipei from Pingtung for a holiday, Ella's elder sister registered her into the competition. Ella almost gave up before the first round because of the long queue of contestants, but was convinced by her sister to stay. Ella made her way through the final round due to her unique deep voice, which caught the company's attention and made her stand out from the others.

After the three of them were signed to HIM, the company did not make them a group because their different personalities and looks did not fit with what the audience was used to. However, because Taiwan had never had an all-girl group made up of different personalities and looks, the company thought that the idea would be new and fresh, so they boldly put the three girls together. When the three girls first heard this, they did not really accept the decision because it was not what they had in mind. All three of them came from different places. They never telephoned each other and had only said 'Hi' when they met briefly. Because most of the songs in the album did not require them to sing together, their relationship at the outset was not very good, which caused the company some consternation. When the company then let them stay in the same room in the same dormitory, the girls were worried that they might argue. But the company hoped that this way they could learn to cooperate with each other. To prevent them from arguing, the record company set a few rules of life for the girls living in the dormitory. After a week, the record company's worries were gone because the three girls grew closer to each other and could be mistaken as triplets! The three girls lived in a small dormitory together for a few months. Sometimes they would cry under their blankets because they were extremely homesick. When they were bored, they opened the window, ate junk food, and watched the stars.

Selina

Selina Ren (任家萱) was born on 31 October 1981, in Taipei, Taiwan. She is (as of 2005), the only member of S.H.E to have a bachelor degree, as her parents wanted her to have a good education. In her childhood, she hated dogs; however, after being introduced to Hebe and Ella who both kept dogs, she started keeping her own dog as well. Her dog's name, Pinky, reflects her colour preference for pink. Her height is 163 cm and she weighs 45 kg.

The name Selina was chosen by her company after taking a personality test; it represents "gentleness".

Hebe

Hebe Tian (田馥甄) is the youngest member of S.H.E, being born on 30 March, 1983, in Hsinchu, Taiwan. She came onto the scene at 18 years old; her height is 161.5 cm.

Ella

Ella Chen (陳嘉樺) is the oldest member of S.H.E. She was born on 18 June 1981, in Pingtung County, Taiwan. She is an avid basketball player, and usually plays basketball with other Taiwanese celebrities such as Jay Chou. Her height is 163 cm and she weighs 48 kg.

The name Ella was chosen by her company after taking a personality test, it represents "courage".

Cover Songs

S.H.E. has performed cover songs from numerous bands, but they seem to have a special connection with the German band Sweetbox, from which they have covered at least six songs. Note well, although Sweetbox also has a song called "Superstar", S.H.E.'s hit song "Super Star" is actually a cover of Sweetbox's "Chyna Girl".
