Hi, I suggest you check with someone fluent in English before making contributions to articles. Also, person's names are usually not translated into English, for example: "Alejandro Toledo" should not be translated into "Alexander Toledo", or anything similar. Please don't change the name of the city into "Lima City", I'm aware that the official Spanish name for the city is "Ciudad de Lima", but this expression is nonexistent in English, so I added the official Spanish name. Cities such as Helsinki and Stockholm also have their official name in their native language. Greetings. --Tuomas hello 18:36, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I sure respect your contributions, which are very valuable for the articles, although I'd like to correct some mistakes:

  • The reason why I insist on putting nickname instead of motto, is simple: nickname means sobrenombre, motto is like a slogan. Now tell me, is "Ciudad de los Reyes" a sobrenombre or a slogan?
  • Although historical leaders' names are usually translated, current political figures' names tend to be kept in the original language, or else in Spanish we would be calling George Bush Jorge Bush or even worse, Jorge Arbusto. And in the many magazines I've read, I've never seen Alexander Toledo written anywhere.
  • As I stated earlier, I changed the table's title to "Ciudad de Lima" because it seems to be a standard to write these titles in the place's native language (examples: Stockholm, Peru, Venezuela). Also, I think "official website" is more appropiate because I took it from Template:Infobox City which is a wikipedia standard template for cities.
  • Why do you keep adding "Demographics" on top of the ___location map? Not all of the information in the table is about demographics, and certainly not the map.
  • I removed the little dot from the metro agreement part because no other events in the history section has one, why should this particular one have a dot?

Saludos. --Tuomas hello 06:11, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Hola. Lamentablemente no entendí tu explicación sobre por qué es mejor poner motto en vez de nickname. ¿Serías tan amable de explicarmelo en castellano? --Tuomas hello 18:23, Feb 19, 2005 (UTC)

Meaning of word "demographics"

Hello. Thanks for the explanation on the history of the name "La Ciudad de los Reyes". Now I would like to ask you to please stop adding the word Demographics to the table, because it is not included in the standard wikipedia table (and you're the one who encouraged me to use standard tables in the first place!). This standard table is Template:Infobox_City. And as I stated in another message, not all of the information on the table is demography-related. Here's a definition of the word "demography" for you:

de·mog·ra·phy The study of the characteristics of human populations, such as size, growth, density, distribution, and vital statistics

Naming policy - University of San Marcos

See: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Interpretation_of_WP_Naming_policies.

Personally, I would never dream of going to the Spanish Wikipedia and telling them how they should refer to American things in Spanish or reverting their improvements of my Spanish. You keep saying how non-Peruvians are not the right people to be writing about Peru. By the same measure, maybe you are not the right person to be determing what correct Engish usage is. I don't mind correcting your many grammatical errors in English, but I do dislike it when you then revert my corrections. I think that can you can be a useful contributor to Wikipedia and I am very happy to see the recent improvements on the Peruvian articles, butI think you need learn more about how communal editing and decision-making works. -- Viajero 14:39, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Altough I have disagreed with User:Viajero in other points, this time I agree with him. I believe "San Marcos" is more appropriate name than Saint Mark. Sorry HappyApple :( --AAAAA 06:18, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Another idea... Why don't you get more friends from your University involved in Wikipedia? Maybe with more active Wikipedians helping you, you can get your point across.--AAAAA 15:51, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think Saint Mark is a better name, but if there is a consensus that it should be San Marcos, you should let it stay that way to avoid comflict as long as there is a redirect to the Saint Mark name and a highly visible note at the top of the article saying that some people call it the University of Saint Mark. Academic Challenger 05:35, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I checked into it and I have to agree with Viajero on this one. The English-speaking world seems to overwhelmingly use "San Marcos" when referring to this institution. SWAdair | Talk 11:07, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

HappyApple, since your in Lima and attend the university of San Marcos, do you know what the official capacity of its stadium is? some sites put it at 60.000, but others say 67.000? I've been working on peruvian stadiums and would like to know if you know the correct information. User:Dynamax 10:40, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Saludos, Manzana Feliz, parece que hay un malentendido. I strongly urge you accept to the Wikipedia communal decision-making process, as much as you may disagree with the outcome. Cenepa War POV warning

Hello! I saw you put a notice disputing the neutrality of the article on the Cenepa War without any previous talk. That's ok, I guess. I have been working on this article, trying to stick to a neutral point of view as much as I can. Since I am Ecuadorian -and hence, citizen of one of the countries involved- it would be only natural if I missed something somewhere.
Could you specify exactly to which section, paragraphs or sentences are you referring to as having an Ecuadorian point of view? Some details, counterarguments, and sources would be most welcome, so we can go on to discuss the matter.
I'd be happy to edit, reword or revise what you deem as pro-Ecuadorian points of view -since that goes against Wikipedia basic policies- but I'd need specifics first. Cheers. --Andres C. 02:33, 10 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! I did some renaming on the subsections regarding the outbreak of the war. Details are in the talk page of Cenepa War. I'd like to hear what you think about it. Image:Korean-donating-egg.jpg and Image:Korean-line-up.jpg

Hi. In response to your request on my talk page: I feel that there is a problem concerning almost all the images on the Hwang Woo-Suk page. I think serveral are tagged as being promotional photographs released to promote the work of a person/organisation, when in fact they're photographs taken by the press each under a seperate non-free copyright and thus not promotional images at all. We could claim fair use for some of those, but I think the page has far too many images to claim any fair use at the moment. We could claim fair use for about one or two images per-section of text, as long as the images are relevant to the text - the number on the page at the moment is excessive. Some images I think could/should be deleted anyway since they don't add anything to the article or don't relate to the text (e.g. Image:Dr-hwang-athis-office.jpg, Image:Dr-hwang-seminar.jpg, Image:Dr-hwang-korea-slogan.PNG, Image:Cloning-cell.jpg, Image:Doctor-hwang-reporters.PNG, Image:Doctor-hwang-surroundedbyreporters.jpg). I see that there have already been similar discussions on the article's talk page. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but please consider removing a significant number of images, then we can talk about fair use. David Johnson [T|C] 16:48, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your response. I believe each image featured on Dr. Hwang Woo Suk article gives a substancial information regarding his life, research and fate; on the other hand i am not sure if there exists some sort of Wikipedia rule about if an article should had a number-limit for images featured in there, but i know there exists an advocate rule on wikipedia that says about ignoring all the rules, About Image:Dr-hwang-athis-office.jpg, Image:Dr-hwang-seminar.jpg, both of them illustrate the statement bellow Doctor's Lifestyle subsection, on how his life was before his resignation, both show him as a busy scientist on his office (dressed him as doctor) and giving lectures explaining his research to the public, and i feel this gives readers an idea about this part of his life. Image:Cloning-cell.jpg focuses on explaining readers how Somatic cell nuclear transfer is seen under the microscope and is placed below a diagram over how this technique words, i feel this illustrates better that point. About Image:Doctor-hwang-reporters.PNG gives readers an idea how controversies over his scientific research started, and good way to illustrate better that point was after doctor's improvised press conference upon his arrival at incheon airport on May 20 2005, finally Image:Doctor-hwang-surroundedbyreporters.jpg gives a visual concept about what happened after doctor's resignation, and it focuses to explain readers he was cherished professor to his students, and until today many of them want him back. As far as i know, those images are properly cited and they are candidates for fair use doctrine at wikipedia.en , each of them explains different aspects of doctor's life.HappyApple 04:02, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hwang Woo-Suk Contact

Hey Apple, thanks for contacting me but you may have contacted the last person you would want to on this issue. First, my opinions:

  1. I am one who believes we make far too many fair use claims without much merit, this would apply to all of the images you uploaded I believe, so, know that.
  2. Aside from that point, from a style standpoint, I do believe the article has a disproportion of images commiserate with the notoriety of the subject. Also, Suk is a biomed scientist, his work isn't something that is helped with photographs. As an example, Ansel Adams, a photographer, is someone who one would want a great deal of photographs to illustrate the article since he was a famous photographer. In the case of Adams fortunately he did a lot of his work on behalf of the National Park Service so those images are free for us to use, wire images for Suk are not.
  3. I would encourage you to work with the other active editors on the article and find a happy medium regarding the number of pictures and which are most important. A fair use case can better be made if the work is reflective and important of the material, the shear number of images you have used I believe actually damages our ability to make a fair use claim for them.

Whatever the case, I would happy to assist even if I may not necessarily agree with you about the fair use standing of the images. --Wgfinley 01:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hello

Hi HappyApple... while we do appreciate the images, we largely frown on fair use licenses. Fair use is a grey area, and while your rationale is correct, having too many fair use images from one source is kind of pushing things considerably. Please remove some of the images from the Hwang Woo-Suk article and choose only one or two fair use images that are extremely important to the article, or I will be forced to remove all of them and delete the images. I really don't want to do this: however I also don't want make us liable for copyright infringement. - Ta bu shi da yu 05:59, 28 December 2005 (UTC)}Reply

I believe as your current condition of administrator gives you the power to delete images and so on from wikipedia; but i dont think so this kind of sentence "I will be forced to remove all of them and delete the images" should be properly for a newbie like me, i hope that is not a threat. I have stated on each image: source, and explanation. All of them are in much less resolution from the original press kit which they probably came from. All of this work has been taken from websites and according to wikipedia's fair use on images i am claiming they are used for educational purposes and they describe an event from a famous individual, even Wikipedia.en suggests using Google image to finding images. But maybe there is some sort of disproportional use of images on that article, if some of them should be taken out it wont be because they are boring or something like that. A new structure for the article which will take some images out and it will take place in less than seven days since this response was written. --HappyApple 08:00, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image Tagging Image:NicholasLeblanc.JPG

This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:NicholasLeblanc.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stan 04:01, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, i noticed you changed tagg from almost all the images i have uploaded to Hwang Woo Suk article, the copyright issue was previously discussed on the talk page on that article. The community agreed that certain number of images should be taken out, and this was done as of (January 4 2006, i noticed you tagged many other images as well, but i please urge you to do not flood my talk page with many warnings, i think it is a treat from you, in case you havent noticed, there is a wikipedia policy about this on Wikipedia:Ignore all rules. I will add properly source (because is important to state Copyright status) and fair use rationale on all images that requires it, But i did with images on Hwang Woo Suk article so i urge you to don't be so offensive by changing the taggs by using your criteria, be civil. Best regards. HappyApple 15:54, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, HappyApple, I never intended to Threat you. I've just grouped the warning in hope that they seem less intrusive.
About the FU tags, in some of the images the rationale was simply that the image adds usefull information to the article, or that the images was being used solely for informational purposes, or that the image was released to the press. I'm afraid this isn't enough to qualify a use of a piece of work as Fair Use.
In some other cases, the rationale was that the image was released to the press... while the source website stated All Rights Reserved.
I hope you understand my point. It would be wonderfull for us to find out tha each of that images are really usable by Wikipedia. Let's just work together towards that.
Regards, --Abu Badali 16:17, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

More on Rationales

Sorry to be here again, but I couldn't help noticing you readded a FU statement on at least one of the images I have removed it from. I hope you don't take me wrongly, but I really still doesn't share your thoughts on what classify some image's uses as Fair Use.

For instance, on the image Image:Dr-hwang-athis-office.jpg, you used as rationale:

1. The nature of this work is used only for informational purposes. 2. In the absence of graphic material which can be used for the article, Wikipedia suggests fair use images can be uploaded. 3. The image is in much less resolution than the original, hence copies from it will be in much inferior quality. 4. Adding the image on the article, adds substantial information to the article, on this case showing Dr. Hwang Woo Suk, while working at SNU, before his resignation in late 2005. Thus adding the image to the article clears the panorama and make the article better understood to the general public.

I would say about 1 that if used only for informational purposes was enough for FU, every single image use would be FU (as any image is information).

2, it's true statement that does'n add for your argument. The fact that Wikipedia suggests fair use images can be uploaded doesn't make this image use Fair Use.

3 is necessary for some FU image uses, like reproduction of magazine covers (to illustrate the Magazine's article only) or movie posters (to illustrates the Movie solely). Again, I don't understand how this requirement qualifies this image use as Fair Use.

About 4... it's the same as 1, the fact that the image is very usefull to Wikipedia doesn't makes me understand this use as Fair Use.

Again, I really hope you don't take me personally. I'm not (and never was) threatning you. I wish to work with you on this issue. If we can't make ourselves clear (to each other), I suggest we as help to the community.

Best regars, --Abu Badali 16:40, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hwang Woo Suk article and fair use images

Hello, i noticed you quickly feedback at my page, and i want to state that i understand your point and i respect it. I wish you understand mine, and the fact is, Hwang Woo Suk article is a current event (or it was as of early 2006) and unfortunatelly there are not (GDF) or excent to copyright images related to that article, and because of this i uploaded those images. To removing them would leave the article with just words, and doing so would let the article quite boring (not counting the article has turned extremelly large) to the reader if it doesnt find graphic material which can give a visual concept of what's he or she is reading. I would try to find another images with friendlier copyright to wikipedia to replace the previous ones, but as i stated it is a pitty there are practically almost none pictures of photographs which can be used in Wikipedia relating to Hwang Woo Suk, if a fair use is not claimed. I hope you may understand. Best regards, HappyApple signing off. HappyApple 16:49, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

HappyApple, please understand that the fact that we don't have free images for this otherwise boring article (in your own words and opinion) doesn't give us any right to use images we don't have a license too.
Are you quite sure you understand what Fair Use means? Don't don't don't take me wrong, please! I understand you act in perfect good will, but you seem a little bit misguided.
These images need to be removed from Wikipedia's servers. We don't have any rights to use them. They may bring trouble upon Wikipedia. If you allow me, I will be reverting the images desc pages to readd the no-license tags, so that the images go into the speed-deletion process. But if you still think this is unecessay, just let me know why is it so. Or you don't understand (or don't agree) anyhing i've said, please. just let me know. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

Electrolysis Articles

Thank you for your help with the electrolysis articles! I am glad to have a chemist look over them, as I have built and used electrolysis apparatuses, but I do not have a chemistry education myself, so your input and correction on my changes is very welcome. --Corvi 06:44, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello there! Please read the last disscussion that is in this article and show your support for my person. This new user is clearly deviating the problem (Ecuadorian POV pushing) to accuse me as the problem of the page. Messhermit 02:54, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Ytlee.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public ___domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 20:30, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Association

Dear HappyApple: Hi. I wanted to ask you about a possible Hispanic wikipedians association here on the English wikipedia. The purpose would be to trade assignments with members of other Hispanic countries, so that they would write about a topic pertaining to our country while we write about a topic pertaining to theirs. Like a trade. We would benefit a lot by learning about our history as a whole and having other Latinos learn about our own countries at the same time.

That way also, we would promote unity between our paises hermanos. We could become an example to Hispanics around the world. Unfortunately, some Hispanics do believe we are not brothers, and we can begin with our example to prove them wrong.

What do you think, would you be interested in joining such an association?

Thanks and God bless you!

Your hermano in raza, Antonio Tegucigalpa Martin

I responded at Talk:Yuan_T._Lee#Image_on_the_article. Let's keep the discussion at one place.--Jiang 10:12, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Chris: We would be honored to have you check the Wikipedia:Association of Hispanic and Latin American writers and become one of our members.

Thanks and God bless you!

Mistake?

Hello, are you sure you don't have the descriptions for the tests of H2 and O2 on these [1], [2] pages switched around? In my experience the glowing wood will burst into burning white flame to indicate oxygen (not the other way round) and the H2 will simply burn in air.... Also it appears that you are holding the wood splint over the SAME side of the hoffmann apparatus in both images, which unless you switched the polarity of the electricity supply at some point should not be testing two different gasses. --Deglr6328 00:12, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Both were a representation of indicating oxygen, another image in electrolysis of water shown the hydrogen test, thanks for letting me know about this. Now this issue was solved.--HappyApple 18:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image Tagging Image:Elektrolyse1.jpg

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Elektrolyse1.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 21:50, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
