The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), led by a Secretary and overseen by the Governor, is a Washington governmental agency that constructs, maintains, and regulates the use of the state's transportation infrastructure. This infrastructure includes rail lines, state highways, state ferries (considered part of the highway system) and state airports.
A recent campaign against a controversial 9.5-cent-per-gallon increase in the state's portion of the gas tax as part of a larger overall transportation package, resulted in the filing of Initiative 912, which sought to roll back the tax increase. It failed in November of 2005.
