SouJava is a Brazilian Java User Group created to promote Java and other Open Source initiatives. It's recognized as the world's largest Java User Group[1] with over 40,000 members.[2]

History
Brazilian Java User Group SouJava was founded in September 1999[3][4] by Bruno Souza (JavaMan), Fabio Velloso, Einar Saukas, Jefferson Floyd Konz, Alexei Znamensky, and Fabiane Nardon. It's a nonprofit Non-governmental organization supported by volunteer work, quite known by the engagement of its members.
SouJava organizes several Java conferences in Brazil[5], and it's considered a major influence on the adoption of open source by the Brazilian government.[6][7] It's also the co-creator of "Adopt a JSR" program[8][9], together with London Java User Group.
In 2011, SouJava became the first Java User Group nominated for the Java Community Process Executive Commitee[10], as Java Community Process Expert Group Member. The following year, it was awarded as Java Community Process Member/Participant of the Year.[11]
SouJava is located in Sao Paulo, with additional branches in Campinas and Rio de Janeiro. Besides original co-founders Bruno Souza (JavaMan) and Fabio Velloso, currently most proeminent SouJava leaders are Thomas Modeneis, Yara Senger, Mauricio Leal (Maltron), Fabio Velloso, Vinicius Senger, and Otavio Santana.
Leadership
Executive leadership positions are voluntary and unpaid, elected by the director's board. SouJava mandates are listed below:

Bruno is President of SouJava, Brazil's largest JUG, were he has led the group's Javali Project, an ambitious umbrella project that hosts 10 large open source projects. Javali, that includes a project to create an Open Source Java Runtime, is targeted to bring software development into Brazil's open source discussions. Bruno also co-authored the SouJava's Open Source Manifest that discussed Open Source and Open Standards as the way to correctly apply and succeed with Open Source in Brazil. The document was later used as basis for the open source initiatives of one of Brazil's largest development agency, and positivelly influenced the adoption of open source in Brazil.

SouJava was born. I wasn't the first president (Einar Saukas was), but I was really the group's evangelist at the time. I got to become president in early 2000, when the group started a movement to bridge the gap between the Java and the Open Source communities.
