Namban

Japanese word, literally meaning Barbarians from the South. It was applied to Portuguese when they reached the coasts of Japan in the XVIth Century, because their ships appeared the sail from the South. They where later applied to other Europeans as well. The word is now obsolete a very scarcely used.
