Il Brian Clough Trophy è il premio di calcio che viene assegnato al vincitore della sfida tra Nottingham Forest e Derby County, in occasione di ogni East Midlands derby. Il trofeo è stato istituito in onore di Brian Clough, allenatore di successo di entrambe le squadre. Il detentore attuale del trofeo è il Nottingham Forest, dopo diversi anni di dominio dei rivali del Derby County.
Storia
Derby County e Nottingham Forest, club calcistici che distano tra poco più di 30 chilometri, sono da diversi anni arci-rivali. I due club hanno però avuto lo stesso manager durante i loro rispettivi migliori periodi, Brian Clough. Clough ha allenato il Derby dal 1967 al 1973, vincendo la prima Football League della storia dei Rams, mentre è stato allenatore del Nottingham Forest nel lungo periodo dal 1975 al 1993, anni in cui il Forest vinse il suo unico titolo inglese, oltre a due Coppe dei Campioni. In entrambe le occasioni, Clough portò i due club dalla Second Division alla vittoria della First Division. Clough fu il secondo manager a riuscire a vincere il campionato su due panchine differenti, preceduto dal solo Herbert Chapman.
Clough si ritirò dal mondo del calcio nel 1993 e non allenò più nessuna squadra fino alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 2004. Ad inizio 2007, funzionari del Derby County, del Nottingham Forest e del Brian Clough Memorial Fund, insieme alla vedova di Clough Barbara e al figlio Nigel, accettarono di istituire un torneo ufficiale tra i due club con cui Clough ebbe più successo come allenatore. Curioso fu che nel 2009 Nigel Clough divenne l'allenatore del Derby County,[1] dopo diversi anni da giocatore del Forest, quasi tutti sotto la guida di suo padre.
Il trofeo non ha una cadenza regolare, ma viene giocato ogni qual volta i due club si incontrano sul campo da gioco. La partita inaugurale fu un'amichevole pre-campionato concordata tra le due squadre,[2]match in cui tutto il ricavato andò in beneficenza.[3]
Il trofeo è una coppa dell'amicizia in argento con un coperchio in cima. La coppa in sé ha più di cento anni, ma non è mai stata usata prima di diventare il Brian Clough Trophy.[4]
