Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion/The Thacher School
Hi, I started this entry - Katherine Bechtel, daughter of Riley Bechtel (of Bechtel Corporation) recently graduated from the school (2003), Kate Mulhulland (of the L.A. water thing) also recently graduated from the school. The school has hosted and run the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament (amateur tournament) for decades and has a very unique philosophy (which I will certainly expand upon momentarily). I would not have started this entry had I known that I had to pupulate it so *absolutely* quickly. I do apologize, but this is my first post and I'll admit I have been a bit sluggish. No more! I will populate it shortly. I can assure you, it IS a notable school (member of a group of nine schools that include Philips Academy and Philips Academy Exeter). It was founded it 1889 by Sherman Day Thacher, whose letters to a headmaster on the east coast (The Taft School) have been published in a (now out of print) book called "The Taft-Thacher Letters" and expand on his philosophy on running a boarding school. The school itself if founded on the principles of "Honor, Fairness, Kindness, and Truth" and was built on the philosophy that "the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a boy" (refering to the fact that every incoming freshman must care for and learn to ride a horse for at minimum one year.
This is a very unique school, with a hitory dating back to 1889 (it was once a feeder school for Yale, as Sherman Day Thacher's (the founder) father had connections with Yale). That practice was stopped quite some time ago.
Additionally, it is important to remember that this school is on the *west coast*--what most would consider "notable" schools are generally found on the east coast--perhaps why many people in this discussion assert that the school is not notable enough. This schools was among the *first* boarding schools in the west.
Give me a day to put more info up and *then* judge the entry. Thanks.
