Horst Gerson (Berlino, 2 marzo 1907 – Groninga, 10 giugno 1978) è stato uno storico dell'arte olandese di origine tedesca.
Biografia
Dopo aver studiato storia dell'arte prima a Vienna e poi a Berlino, laureandosi nel 1932 con il professor Stechow con una tesi su Philips Koninck, divenne allievo e assistente di Cornelis Hofstede de Groot e lavorò alla realizzazione dell'RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) durante il periodo 1934–1966[1]. Nel 1940 divenne cittadino olandese e il primo gennaio 1954 direttore dell'RKD[1] Era cugino di Karl Lilienfeld, che aveva assistto Hofstede de Groot prima di lui[1]. Nel 1966 divenne professore di storia dell'arte at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, and during the years 1966–1975 he was head of the Kunsthistorisch Instituut Groningen.[2] He is known for his publications, starting with his 'Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts' published in 1942.[2] He assisted Abraham Bredius with his Rembrandt catalogue raisonné, and later wrote his own version in 1968 which reduced the number of attributed Rembrandt works from 639 to 420, and the next year published a revision of Bredius's catalog that reduced the number even further.[3] The Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) under the direction of Ernst van de Wetering has systematically gone through the Gerson papers and is in the process of re-attributing paintings to Rembrandt, most notably the self-portrait wearing a white feathered bonnet in Buckland Abbey.[4] The last installment of the RRP's 'Corpus of Rembrandt paintings' published in 2014 included 348 paintings, of which 295 were included in Gerson's 1968 catalog.[5]
He died in Groningen.
