Arizona Republic

I'm hoping someone with access to Highbeam or some other subscription news aggregator can help me improve Lion Guard by finding a specific source:

  • McDermott, J. "Trump’s Brownshirts? Militia vows to 'protect' Donald Trump", Arizona Republic, 13 June 2016

I'm at a loss. Not only can I not find the source, but I can't even find any evidence online that it ever existed. Can someone please find the source and confirm that it actually exists? Thanks in advance. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 04:29, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I was thinking. And I already looking in azcentral.newspapers.com. Are there other subscription services in which you can search for an article title across all publications and dates? That's why I was thinking of Highbeam. --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 05:31, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@DrFleischman: I checked Highbeam, nothing there either. I also checked newspapers.com as well but there is no article that mentions "trump" and "brownshirts" in the Arizona Republic, ever (only one opinion piece from Dec 2016 that has nothing to do with the article in question). Regards SoWhy 06:57, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have you asked User:OberRanks yet? It seems he's the one who added that reference in the article, and he's still on Wikipedia, so maybe he can help you. (Seems like a dubiously reliable user, with a 10000 edit count and a prominent 20000 edits badge on his user page.) – b_jonas 12:10, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't asked OberRanks about this particular source yet, though I was intending to if we couldn't find it here. OberRanks and I have had our share of friction over these very sorts of issues lately, and I didn't want to add fuel to the fire unnecessarily. Of course I'd be appreciative if they could substantiate the citation. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) --Dr. Fleischman (talk) 15:59, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The page Talk:Lion Guard is a pretty good record of Fleischman's concerns for this article. The "friction" is pretty much one sided as I've answered every question given about the sources for this article and where they came from. I'm perfectly fine with removing dubious or unsourced material, but have left this article now as there is a strong indication of some conflict of interest issues developing. The best thing would be for other editors to start adding additional material. I've gone about as far as I can with the primary source material, most of which was given to me by another source (the Maryland Republican Party). I also removed the page from watchlist as its not worth the effort to defend every source listed. -O.R.Comms 16:52, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I checked Westlaw, which has the Arizona Republic in full text from this period, and there was nothing. There were a handful of articles covering the Lion Guard from other publications, but nothing with this title. It may be time to mark this request Resolved and move on. I see no reason to doubt OberRanks' probity, but I think O.R. may have been given a bad source. John M Baker (talk) 14:14, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@DrFleischman: I came to the conclusion that it's a bogus source after checking ProQuest (which claims to have the full text of the The Arizona Republic, plus its online edition, plus its blogs) and searching ProQuest, Factiva, Lexis/Nexis, and NewsBank for any combination of the above keywords in any publication on any date, without finding a good match. As OberRanks is not prepared to defend the source, I think it's safe to remove it and any content sourced to it. Is there anything else the Resource Exchange can do for you on this, or may this be marked {{resolved}}? --Worldbruce (talk) 15:44, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance verifying Financial Times reference

{{Resolved}}

Today's "Did you Know?" section on the front page states that "the Border Police of Georgia have continued to help enforce Georgian sovereignty over Abkhazia and South Ossetia since the end of the Russo-Georgian War".

This statement seems potentially contentious because Abkhazia and South Ossetia have claimed independence from Georgia and are recognized as independent states by a handful of other countries (most notably Russia). It is also unclear what exactly is meant by "help enforce Georgian sovereignty".

Looking at the linked article, Border Police of Georgia, it turned out that the part of claim pertaining to South Ossetia had a reference that did not support the claim so I removed it. (In fact the cited source was a news article about an incident where South Ossetians removed a Georgian flag from disputed territory claimed by South Ossetia, and did not mention the Georgian border police at all.)

The fact that the first reference was invalid calls into question the second reference in this sentence. However, the second reference is behind a paywall so I am not able to access it.

Can someone check whether the reference below supports the claim that "the Border Police of Georgia have continued to help enforce Georgian sovereignty over Abkhazia [...] since the end of the Russo-Georgian War"?

  • Gorst, Isabel (August 20, 2009). "Georgia threatens Abkhazia over sea-trade". Financial Times. Retrieved September 21, 2017.

It would also be helpful to make the claim more specific by describing what actions the border police have done in the Abkhazian area to enforce Georgian sovereignty claims.

Thanks! --2601:644:1:B7CB:44D2:D1A7:14DD:E76 (talk) 21:43, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article does support the assertion. Relevant passages: "Abkhazia, the breakaway region of Georgia, threatened to use force to protect its seaborne trade on Thursday after Georgian coastguards arrested a vessel bound for Sukhumi, Abkhazia’s seaside capital, in the second case of its kind this week. . . . Georgian coastguards arrested a ship carrying scrap metal from Abkhazia to Turkey on Thursday, the fourth such seizure this year. The vessel, operating under a Cambodian flag and manned by a Syrian crew, was bound for Turkey, the Georgian border police said. Earlier this week Georgian coastguards diverted a Turkish fuel tanker approaching Abkhazia to Georgia’s port of Poti and arrested the captain." Note that, according to our article, the border police includes the coast guard. John M Baker (talk) 23:20, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I updated the article; the sentence now reads: "Since the end of the war, the Coast Guard has continued to the enforce the Georgian sea blockade of Abkhazia, arresting several commercial vessels traveling to and from Abkhazia on the Black Sea." 2601:644:1:B7CB:44D2:D1A7:14DD:E76 (talk) 00:00, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Pbsouthwood: sent index. Ch 6 is 19 pages. I'm leery of copying that on top of the 15 pages of chapters 1 & 2 because the entire meat of the book is only 79 pages, the rest being taken up with various forwards, introductions, a glossary, reference materials, etc. Also the nature of the chapter puts it far from the ideal, scholarly, source. I feel a better source must exist, although I don't have one to suggest. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:34, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Worldbruce, Please don't go beyond your comfort zone. Maier is one of the more useful sources on the topic, as it is well known, and a landmark of sorts, you could say he opened the closet. Most of the people in the list you sent appear to be well known in recreational and scientific diving. I guess at least half would qualify for a Wikipedia article, but I can live without chapter 6, interesting as it may turn out to be. We can call this resolved with thanks. • Usernameunique, ha! Don't mean to brag, but I probably have the biggest Boniface-related archive in the world. It's my only vice. Anyway, I do have his dissertation; I was hoping for it to be published and more widely available, so it could have an effect. The article you sent me, and the few other things that he did academically (that I know of), are all related to that subject matter. He's not the only one for whom academia hasn't worked, for whatever reason: you seem to be better at searching than me, so maybe you can find out what happened to Janina Cünnen after her wonderful (but thoroughly German...) dissertation Fiktionale Nonnenwelten was published. There's a few more names that I can rattle off: it's a rough business, rougher than many may think. I will drop him a line though, if only to say hello. Thanks again! New York Times lookup

This article John Serry Sr. has a lot of off-line references to the New York Times. I am wondering if these are reviews or upcoming event listings. I would appreciate any help to link these online, or in finding out if they are advertisements or legitimate journalistic work. I don't have a subscription to use the search, or a title to use a Google search. --—Anne Delong (talk) 19:12, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Anne Delong: The two NYT citations from the 1930s are advertisements that identify an orchestra, leader, and venue, but don't mention Serry. Searching for "John Serry" returns only one NYT news story (as opposed to display ad) that is cited in the article: "Diseuse in Debut Here", 1 March 1942, p. 36. It makes a passing mention of Serry: "Assisted by Lou Cooper, pianist, and John Serry, accordionist, ..." Email me if you would like a copy. Let me know how far you would like to pursue citations to pages that don't mention Serry or advertisements that do mention him. --Worldbruce (talk) 20:05, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Worldbruce. I think that the ads should be removed, especially ones that don't mention the subject. I've put a note about that on the talk page and I'll wait a few days to see if anyone objects.—Anne Delong (talk) 21:05, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Ms. Delong - Thank you in advance for your thoughtful analysis. The references in question (i.e. to the New York Times) might actually serve a useful purpose for prospective researchers of the future. Consequently I would advise against removing these references without first considering the following analysis. While there can be no doubt that the presence of an "advertisement" does not unequivocally substantiate the occurrence of a historical event in the same manner that a reference from a newspaper article, it is equally clear that its presence in an authoritative source such as the The New York Times does serve to increase the probability of a correct citation for the subject matter described in the article. It would seem highly unlikely that noted professional musicians and the promoters at professional concert venues such as Radio City, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel or the Plaza Hotel in New York City would allocate substantial time and resources in order to advertise concert performances on specific dates and times in an authoritative source such as The New York Times in a fictitious manner, while actually scheduling another performance on exactly the same date and time at another concert venue, or perhaps even more improbably --failing to schedule a concert performance at all. In addition, the administrators of such noted professional schools of the era (such as the Biviano Accordion Center) could hardly be expected to advertise their course offerings and the noted musicians on their faculty for purely frivolous reasons. In addition, while these references may not actually cite the name of each of the artists performing within the orchestral ensembles cited in the article, they do serve to substantiate and document the existence of the musical ensembles in question during the time period referenced within the article. In addition, one could hardly expect an advertisement to provide a compete listing of the members of an entire orchestral ensemble during this period of time (1930's - 1940s) i.e. before the advent of the Web. In so far as these references serve to document and substantiate the existence of the orchestral ensembles cited within the article, they provide a useful function by providing credible documentation for the contextual framework of the article itself. In the "ideal world" such citations would provide the specific names of the artists and perhaps even a critical review of the performance itself. One should keep in mind, however, that during while World War II raged in the late 1930s and 1940s, resources were scare and the allocation of space within periodicals was limited. Consequently, as researchers we must be grateful for the citations and references which we are able to salvage under such unique circumstances. With these observations in mind, I would encourage you to refrain from deleting such useful reference citations in the days ahead. Respectfully Yours 72.69.152.90 (talk) 00:11, 29 August 2017 (UTC)JJ72.69.152.90 (talk) 00:18, 29 August 2017 (UTC)JJ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.69.152.90 (talk)

Anne Delong, do you still need the NYT articles? --Usernameunique (talk) 23:21, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Usernameunique for reminding me about this, but I think Worldbruce's analysis made the situation clear.—Anne Delong (talk) 23:53, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Anne Delong Fair enough. Assuming it's appropriate to mark as {{tl|resolved}}, and let the discussion continue (if it needs to) on the article's talk page? --Usernameunique (talk) 00:00, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Does Who's Who claim Mohammad Asghar is an only child?

WHO’S WHO The article is Mohammad Asghar. The broad issue is a complicated and contentious edit request here. The narrow issue is whether "he was the only child" is correct. There is no citation at the end of that sentence, but the next sentence makes a reference to Who's Who which requires subscription. If someone has access to that document could they tell me whether or not it claims he is an only child? I have solid, but not citable evidence that this is incorrect. If the source doesn't make the claim, it's easy enough to remove but if the source does make the claim I'll have to think through what to do next. --S Philbrick(Talk) 15:49, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sphilbrick: Not immediately helpful, Im afraid, but I don't think WW is a WP:RS. It's the dead-tree equivalent of WP:UGC: They ask you about yourself, and then publish it. — fortunavelut luna 15:52, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that is helpful. I know from personal experience that there are some Who's Who knockoffs that are scammy but I thought this one was more legit. If they are a reliable source than I don't have to worry about a conflict — I can remove the claim that isn't supported by reliable source. --S Philbrick(Talk) 16:07, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Leaving aside the reliability issue, Who's Who does not mention whether or not Asghar has any siblings. Here's his entry:

Who's Whos are famously self-reported. I would only use it as a self-published source about self (not for outstanding claims), and even then, many of their aspects are not worth repeating if not duplicated in reliable, secondary source coverage czar 23:57, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
