Monster Hunter 2 (MH2 or MH dos) is a Playstation 2 game made by Capcom, and the sequel to Monster Hunter.

Details

According to IGN, MH2 is "a full-blown sequel to the creature hunting game (after the expansion pack, Monster Hunter G), this new title includes a number of new gameplay systems. Monster Hunter 2 focuses more closely on giving players the feeling of living the life of a hunter. Time will now flow in the game, with appropriate changes to the fields of play and the enemies that populate them. You'll also get a better sense of being part of a town, with improved online and offline play concepts and design. All modes will benefit from new weapons, new fields of play, and new monsters. When playing online, you'll have the feeling of being in the same world as everyone who's currently logged into the game. There is also cross-connectivity with the PSP version of the game." [1]

Oversea release?

Capcom has announced many times that they are not planning to bring MH2 overseas[citation needed].

Monster Profiles

  • Unless stated otherwise, each wyvern will have the following attacks: A tail swipe, a charge attack where it runs at the player and sometimes spits fireballs and a fireball attack (which can consist of other elements).

Returning Monsters (With Videos)

Note: Videos are courtesy of YouTube

Kirin

Online Event only monster. A big white unicorn with the ability to possess electricity at will.

  • Battle Video1 : [[2]]
  • Battle Video2 : [[3]]

Rathalos

A large red wyvern; male. Cen also come in blue or silver. The main wyvern of Monster Hunter, Rathalos is considered a rite-of-passage of upcoming hunters. Spends a lot of time flying, and will fly away at random times, making the hunter go after it. There are Blue and Silver colored variations; the silver version is called Silversoul. Its claws have poison in them.

  • Battle Video : [[4]]

Rathian

Green and brown wyvern; the female version of Rathalos. Can also come in pink and gold. Prefers to stay on the ground, rather than fly. There are Pink and Gold colored variations; the gold version is called Goldheart. Spits 3 consecutive fireballs. It's backflip attack is extremely powerful, happens very quickly and has the ability to poison and stun a character. It often follows through with a charge attack. For these reasons, the Rathian is potentially more dangerous than the Rathalos.

  • Battle Video2 : [[6]]

Gravios

An adult Basarios. Has a sleep-sac that makes the hunter fall asleep right under it with its gas attack. Its energy beam attack is enough to kill even the most well-prepared hunters can also now burrow to other areas than it's volcanic nest . One of the harder wyverns in the game. The black Gravios is extremely dangerous and can be a challenge even for the experienced Hunters.

  • Battle Video : [[7]]

Plesioth

Blue aquatic wyvern with water power. Also one of the biggest monsters in Monster Hunter. Has a green colored variation. Its breath weapon is a high pressure water jet, very weak against fire and thunder elements.

  • Battle Video : [[8]]

Gypceros

A strange wyvern that acts like the Kut-Ku. Can steal items and blind the player with the crest on its head. Also has a pink-colored variation. Spits poison instead of fire.

Yian Kut-Ku

Small, pink, bird-like wyvern with large ears and acts like a chicken. Also has a blue variation. Possibly one of the first wyverns that a new hunter will kill, and possibly the wyvern that gets slain the most. It is possible that a hunter's first experience with this monster is through another quest, such as a different hunting quest, other than the actual Yian Kut Ku quest.

  • Battle Video2 : [[10]]

Khezu

Cave monster with sickly white fleshy skin. Khezus are blind and detect prey with a sense of smell. Has the electricity element. Also has a red variation.

Fatalis

Online "main boss" in Monster Hunter. Large flying dark dragon with powerful fire blasts.

Returning Monsters (No Video)

Basarios

A juvinile Gravios made of rock. Emits two gas attacks: one that poisons the player, and one that puts the player to sleep. Enjoys the charge attack.

Melynx

A variation of the Felyne, it has black fur, and will try to steal items from hunters that don't carry felvine. Items can be re-obtained by attacking the Felyne, or by going into the Felyne village and searching for one’s items.

Felyne

A small white cat which is peaceful, unless attacked, when it then hits you with its cane and runs at you with small barrel bombs.

Bullfango

A vicious wild boar-type monster that will charge-attack on sight. Bullfango are notorious for annoying most players due to the fact that they tend to come in groups of three or more, and rarely give the player a chance to get up. The fact that there is rarely only one in an area makes them rather unpopular in delivery missions, as characters holding an item move much slower than usual, cannot attack, and if the character is hit, they drop the item they were carrying.

Velociprey

A velociraptor-type monster, it is blue and will attack on sight. If you are lucky you may find a rare white velociprey. Variations are Genprey and Ioprey. Genprey have the "stun/paralyze" element, while the ioprey have the "Poison" element. If a killing blow is delivered while they are in the air, they will separate into two pieces and disappear.

Genprey

A certain breed of Velociprey. They are yellow and their claws can stun hunters.

Ioprey

A certain breed of Velociprey, which are red in colour. The strongest of all breeds. They are large, and they can spit poison at hunters.

Vespoid

A flying monster similar to a giant wasp, about half the size of a hunter. They also carry the "paralyze" element, but only if they stab the hunter in the back. In most areas, they will return after being killed. When killed, they either explode, or stay in one piece, depending on the amount of damage inflicted, but only can be "harvested" when in one piece.

Hornetaur

Similar to the vespoid, this monster is like a large beetle that crawls slowly, yet will perform quick jump attacks.

Aptonoth

Similar to cows, they are not aggressive, but may run if one of their herd is attacked/killed. They may attack, but it is slow, easy to avoid and does not deal too much damage.

Kelbi

Not aggressive, this animal resembles a deer with two straight horns. They will not leave the area, unlike the aptonoths, but they will run away from hunters. Only the males will attack if provoked, but again, this attack doesn't hurt much, and can be easily avoided.

Velocidrome

A raptor-like monster. The alpha-male of the pack. Also has a silver-colored variation. They are very large with an orange crest on their head.

Gendrome

The alpha-male of the Genprey. They are very large and have 2 crests on the top of their head.

Iodrome

The alpha-male of the Ioprey. They are very large and powerful, with giant crests on the top of their head.

Teo Tuskital

A lion-like wyvern with a red mane. Has a barrier of flame that the hunter can destroy by knocking off a couple of its body parts. The Nana Tuskital has this barrier, too. Other names are: Teo Teskitory.

Equipment

Armor

Armours are now levelable, which means the defense can be upgraded with the right amount of money. Besides the "+" armor (which is an better kind of armor forged with rarer materials and high sum of money) like in the preivous Monster Hunter, the game introduces a new kinds of armor - "S" and "G" type. Those armor have differnet looks, defense point, and skills from their original concept and it use different materials and amount of money to make.

Bowguns

Long Bows

A new addition to the Gunner class. They are very powerful. Instead of different shots, there are different oils one can apply to the arrows. Different bows also allow different charge-up specials, such as firing up to 5 arrows at once.

The bowguns have remained basically the same as in Monster Hunter, but some bowguns have the ability to block.

Heavy Bowguns[[38]]

Light Bowguns[[39]]

Lances

Lances

Lances are basically the same as in Monster Hunter, only slightly weaker in terms of attack strength. The slang term for this change is "nerfed," which is most likely a reference to Nerf guns, which fire harmless bullets. [[40]]

Gun Lances

The basic lance, only with new attack combos and the ability to shoot bullets and charged shots. [[41]]

Hammers

Hammers

Hunting Horns

These are hammers with the ability to play music. Music can boost a party's status, and give them small bonuses such as "earplug".

GreatSwords

Great Swords

Greatswords now have the ability to charge-up, thus dealing more damage. [[42]]

Katanas

Katanas (also called Samurai swords) are similar to the greatsword. They are fast and have a berserker gauge, which when filled, the hunter can release a powerful burst of adrenaline, similar to the dual swords.

Swords

Dual Swords

Dual swords are much faster, and deliver more blows with the demonization. Duals are much more useful in Monster Hunter 2. [[43]]

Sword and Shield

With swords and shields, one can use items with your weapon out, something one cannot do with any other weapon, nor in Monster Hunter. Also, the elemental bonuses in Monster Hunter 2 are boosted for the sword and shield.

  • There are much more weapons than the ones that are shown in the picture. These are only about 30% of the actual in-game weapons.

Items

Stun Traps

A new way of tranquilizing a monster. This trap stuns the monster, making them immobile. Hunters can then tranquilize it with tranq bombs, or continue to hack away at it.

Ornaments

These accessories can be added to weapons to give them status boosts, elemental attack power, and skills.

Features

PVP Mode

A PVP arena where players go head to head in a wyvern killing competition. Hunters can capture a wyvern, raise it, and put it in the arena. One controls it with a series of standard flutes, although it will act on its own. Hunters must hunt their opponent's wyvern. PVP mode can be played with a partner, but one may only bring one wyvern into the fight between the two participants. Hunters are also allowed to knock out the other hunter, but to win, one must defeat the opposing wyvern.

Drinking Competition

Cooking Meat

Although this is not a new feature, cooking meat has become more useful. Every spit has a different song, has different uses, and the meats have different bonuses.

New Hairstyles and Haircuts In game

Now hunters do not have to keep the same hair throughout their whole adventure; one may go have a Melynx cut their hair. Template:Spoiler

Template:Spoiler-end

Arena Mode

An arena for slaying certain monsters. Hunters cannot bring along their own weapons, instead they pick from a set. One obtains points for completing arena challenges, the purpose for these points is for training.

Item Combination

One may now combine up to 3 items.

Day & Night/Seasons

Unlike Monster Hunter, MH2 has an active day/night system. During the day, certain monsters and NPCs come out. At night, other monsters and NPCs come out. The perfect time to hunt varies on what day it is, and what season it is. There are 3 seasons in Monster Hunter 2: the Green season, which is similar to summer, the Blue season, which is the mating season, and the Yellow season, which is fall. Different areas cannot be accessed in different seasons. In Green season, every area can be accessed. In Blue season, the snowy mountain area is inaccessible, and the tower area is inaccessible in Yellow season. Different monsters come out in different seasons, as well. The rare breed of Blue Kut-Ku only comes out during mating season. Also, during mating season, monsters are more aggressive. It seems these seasons appear at random times in the game, but there might be a pattern to it.

Ship Yard

Hunters can get a shipyard, with a ship, and pay to increase its quality and level. The higher level it is, the more areas they can access. One of the areas they can access is the old village, kokoto from Monster Hunter, where they can do everything possible from MH.
