Early life

Pitt was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Southern Baptist parents William A. Pitt and Jane Etta Hillhouse. The Pitt family is mainly of English and Irish descent. He and his two siblings, Doug Pitt and Julie Neal Pitt, grew up in Springfield, Missouri, where the family moved soon after his birth. Pitt's parents and siblings still live in Springfield, attending James River Assembly in Ozark, Missouri.

At Kickapoo High School, Pitt participated in sports, debating, student government, and school musicals. He attended the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri - Columbia where he became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was two credits shy of graduating with a journalism degree in 1982 when he left to try his luck in Hollywood.

His choice of career was somewhat of a surprise to those around him. He had performed in several fraternity shows, but never shared a desire to act professionally. Pitt seemed to show more promise in music. Yet in 1986 in his Datsun (known as Runaround Sue) and with just $325 in his pocket, took off for California. "In my head," he later said, "I was done with college. I was on to the next thing."

Arriving in Hollywood, Pitt knew a girl whose father owned a house there, but was away on business. While a housekeeper inhabited the house in his absence, Pitt stayed for a month, rent free. Having already made several friends, he then moved into a flat in North Hollywood, along with eight other men.

For money, Pitt picked up odd jobs and at one point had a bet with a friend as to who could score the most humiliating job. Brad won easily, dressing up as a giant chicken for El Pollo Loco, standing out on the corner of Sunset Boulevard in 100 degree heat. Aside from this, he spent time selling cigarettes, delivering fridges, and assisting a soap opera writer.

Career

Early work

Pitt studied under coach Roy London and would continue to do so for six years. He appeared in the sitcom Head Of The Class, even dating the show's star Robin Givens, much to the disgruntlement of her ex-husband, Mike Tyson. He also appeared in an episode of Growing Pains.

Eventually, work began to pick up, and larger roles began to appear, such as a role as Chris earing as Chris on the long-running soap, Another World.

Following the soap opera experience, Pitt was asked to read for another part and eventually found himself playing Shalane McCall's boyfriend Charles in Dallas. He also had a number of roles in prime time series such as thirtysomething, 21 Jump Street, and Freddy's Nightmares.

Brad gradually began finding a few minor roles in movies, as well. In both Less Than Zero and Charlie Sheen's No Man's Land, the roles went uncredited. but provided a breakthrough into film.

Then in 1988 came the first starring role, in Dark Side Of The Sun, where he played a young American taken by his family to the Adriatic to find a remedy for a terrible skin condition. The movie was shot in Yugoslavia in the summer of 1988 with Brad being paid a little over $10,000 for the seven-week filming. Despite the film's successful progress and with editing nearly complete, civil war broke out and much of the film was lost in the ensuing chaos.

However Brad won a part in the TV movie Too Young To Die?, about a teenager given the death penalty for murder. As white trash drug-hound pimp Billy Canton, Brad's character was unpleasant, taking beastly advantage of runaway Juliette Lewis, who he began dating in real life.

"It was quite romantic," he later observed dryly, "shooting her full of drugs and stuff".

The pair would be together for three years. During their relationship, Brad's career began to develop dramatically.

1991-1993

In 1991, Pitt starred as Joe Maloney in Across the Tracks in which he portrayed a young Californian athlete with a difficult criminal brother played by Rick Schroeder.

However, Pitt finally got his big break in one of that year's biggest hits: Thelma & Louise with a 15-minute mega-performance, showing off his toned physique, giving Geena Davis a good sight and then robbing her blind. Pitt had in fact been third choice for the role. William Baldwin was the first choice, but he chose to do Backdraft instead.

Immediately Pitt became aware of the possibility of being typecast as a mere beefcake. After Thelma and Louise, Pitt starred in Johnny Suede as a groovy big-haired rock star in 1991 alongside Catherine Keener and Nick Cave. The film was directed by Tom DiCillo. Then he took a big risk by competing with animations in Cool World - a movie that had millions of men questioning their sexuality when they found they fancied the cartoon version of Kim Basinger. He won both roles against the wishes of money-men who wanted bigger name actors to star.

The run of success continued with Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It in 1992, for which Brad learned fly fishing by casting off of Hollywood buildings.

Then came Kalifornia in 1993, a road movie in which he played a scruffy serial killer alongside his then girlfriend Juliette Lewis and X-Files actor David Duchovny.

1994-2000

1994

The role that many believe truly catapulted Pitt to movie stardom was that of the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac in the movie adaptation of Anne Rice's novel, Interview With The Vampire in 1994. Pitt played the seventeenth century vampire which required several hours work in make-up on set to achieve the white skin of the character and he had to wear a pair of luminous green eyes, vampire fangs and a shoulder length hairpiece to complete the appearance. Pitt worked with the eleven-year-old Kirsten Dunst and even had to kiss her in one scene much to the disgust of the young Hollywood actress. Pitt starred in the film with already acclaimed Hollywood actors such as Tom Cruise, Christian Slater and Antonio Banderas, solidifying his status in the major film industry in front of a global audience of millions. He followed up that success with Legends of the Fall alongside Anthony Hopkins.

1995

In 1995 Brad starred in Se7en as the police detective David Mills alongside Morgan Freeman in the hunt for a serial killer played by Kevin Spacey. He met actress Gwyneth Paltrow on set, playing his wife in the film who is eventually beheaded and the two began a two year relationship, appearing at the premiere together.

That same year, Pitt was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Jeffrey Goines in the 1995 film Twelve Monkeys in which he acted alongside Bruce Willis. It was reported that Pitt took the role of Jeffrey in order to get rid of his "pretty boy" image in which he purposely tried to make the character look as unattractive as possible, to the point of cutting his own hair. The crew also took his cigarettes away so that he would seem to be more irritated than usual.

1996

In 1996, a quiet year, Brad had a smaller role in his only film, Sleepers in which he starred alongside top actors such as Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman and Jason Patric.

1997

In 1997 Pitt played the IRA terrorist Rory Devany in The Devil's Own alongside Harrison Ford, the first of several films where he has acted using an Irish accent. Reportedly Pitt had a difficult time with the making of the film and expressed his unhappinness with the final script which had apparently been rewritten seven times. Brad threatened to boycott the film which was turning into a disaster but was halted in the process with the threat of a $63 million law suit for breach of contract.

Pitt starred as Heinrich Harrer in the 1997 film Seven Years in Tibet

A busy year, that same year he played the main role of Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer in the Jean Jacques Annaud film Seven Years In Tibet. Pitt trained for months for the role which demanded a great deal of trekking and mountain climbing, working out with co-star English actor David Thewlis by rock climbing in California and the Alps. Although Pitt's German accent in the film was not entirely convincing, the film received popular reviews and was hailed by Tibetan nationalists, much to the disgust of the Chinese government, which subsequently banned Pitt and Thewlis from China for life. [1] [2]

1998

In 1998 Pitt starred as the main character in the supernatural film Meet Joe Black, retaining his bleach blonde curtains style haircut he had sported in the Devil's Own and Seven Years in Tibet in 1997. Pitt starred as a personification of Death inhabiting the body of a young man in order to learn what it is like to be human whilst informing a billionaire tycoon that his life on Earth is nearly over. The film covers many storylines at once, including a naive Death's first experiences with simple pleasures like peanut butter and falling in love with a young women played by Claire Forlani. The film gave Pitt another chance to work alongside Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins whom he had previously worked with in Legends of the Fall.

1999

In 1999 Brad Pitt starred in what is one of his most recognizable roles yet, in the cult classic Fight Club, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk. Working with a previous director David Finch whom he had worked with on Se7en Pitt portrayed the character of Tyler Durden, a highly colorful and tenacious character and also highly complex.

Pitt trained for over six months for the role to attain the A1 physique of Tyler Durden building lean muscle tone by repetitive weight training and an Atkins Diet style dietary regime [citation needed]. His character was particularly flamboyant giving Pitt the chance to flaunt his movie star looks with a tanned leather jacket, outrageous aviator sunglasses, and Hawaiian shirts.

2000

In 2000 Pitt retained his physical fitness and played the role of a gypsy Irish boxer in the gangster movie Snatch alongside Vinnie Jones and Benicio Del Torro. The film was a wild caper involving a diamond heist, Russian and American mafia and the shady underground world , that saw Pitt brought in as a ringer by two failing promoters. The movie saw him replicating his Devil's Own Irish accent inspired by his co-star Benicio Del Toro's recent performance in The Usual Suspects. Pitt continued to train for the role, and honed his boxing skills at Ricky English's gym in Watford.

2001-present

In 2001 Brad Pitt was given the chance the work with long-term friend and actress Julia Roberts in the comical road movie The Mexican (2001). After his wedding to "Friends" actress Jennifer Aniston in the summer of that year he immediately began filming for Spy Game, a Cold War thriller in which he starred alongside veteran actor Robert Redford playing the role of his mentor. At the end of the year, Pitt finished filming Ocean's Eleven with George Clooney and Matt Damon, a highly successful remake of the 1960s classic a major hit at the box office sparking off several sequels. The film established a close friendship between the three particularly between Pitt and Clooney.

Since then he has done numerous films, including the sequel Ocean's Twelve and the Greek historical epic Troy in 2004 in which he portrayed the historical character of Achilles. Although a success, his character was actually incorrectly identified as the cousin of Patroclus. In Homer's Iliad, Achilles and Patroclus have a traditional Ancient Greek homosexual relationship. Interestingly, Brad allegedly turned down the role of Hephaestion in Alexander due to personal concerns with the character. This character was a best friend and lover to Alexander. The Achilles/Patroclus relationship as lovers was referenced in the movie Alexander by Christopher Plummer's character Aristotle. During the production of Troy Pitt also sustained an injury to his Achilles tendon which was highly ironic playing the role of Achilles. [2]

In 2005 Pitt starred in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, in which he and his current partner, Angelina Jolie, starred as the title roles. There was much speculation in the press at the time that Brad was embarking on a relationship with Angelina whilst the film was under production but Brad has strongly denied any intimate involvement whilst married to Jennifer Aniston.

In March 2006 it was announced that Paramount had purchased the rights to The Sparrow for Pitt's production company, Plan B, and that Pitt himself would be playing the lead role of Sandoz. [3] In June 2006 it was announced that Paramount and Brad Pitt's production company Plan B will be working on a new zombie film called World War Z, based on the book of the same name by Max Brooks. The film is set 10 years after a zombie apocalypse. Crown publishing will be releasing the book later in the fall.[4]

To date Pitt has turned down a number of major roles including The Matrix, Apollo 13, The Bourne Identity, Alexander, The Devil's Advocate, Almost Famous, The Chamber and American Psycho.

Other work

Like many A-list stars, Pitt does not normally perform in American television commercials, instead opting to do commercials that are seen in Asia only, most notably for Edwin Jeans, the Toyota Altis, and Japanese canned coffee, ROOTS. A notable exception to this is a Heineken commercial which aired during the 2005 Super Bowl. It was directed by David Fincher, who directed Pitt in the feature films Se7en and Fight Club.

Together with Aniston and Paramount Pictures head Brad Grey, Pitt is the co-founder of the production company 'Plan B'. Aniston is no longer a partner in the company, although she is still attached to many projects that were set up before her divorce. The company produced the blockbuster Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp.

He has also had a cameo appearance in series 8 of Friends and on an episode of MTV's Jackass, in which he took part in a staged abduction of himself. In a later episode, he and some cast-members run wild through the streets of Los Angeles in gorilla suits.

Personal life

Early relationships

At college, his University of Missouri classmates included Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow and ABC-TV news anchor Elizabeth Vargas and it was rumoured that friends tried to set up Pitt and Sheryl Crow but nothing came of it.

Pitt dated Sonita back in the late 1980s and after a stint on the TV Show Head of the Class Brad Pitt dated Mike Tyson's then ex-wife Robin Givens. Pitt has also dated Geena Davis, Shalane McCall, Jill Schoelen, Alice Wilkinson and Cork Actress, Shirley Walsh. Sometime after that the 26 year old Pitt became involved in a three-year relationship with 17-year old actress Juliette Lewis who was his co-star in Too Young to Die? and Kalifornia. They broke up very shorty after Brad developed a problem in his knees. He could barely walk.

Brad dated English actress Thandie Newton briefly on the set of the 1994 film Interview With The Vampire but the relationship soon fizzled out. She has publicly described Pitt as "A very beautiful man".

Pitt was involved in a long-term relationship with actress Gwyneth Paltrow whom he met and became close to on the set of the 1995 film Se7en who played his wife in the film. They became engaged in December 1996 after Pitt proposed to her in Argentina on set of Seven Years in Tibet, but the couple split in June 1997. Extensive tabloid coverage surrounded the relationship. Nude photographs of the couple, taken by paparazzi, controversially appeared in magazines, primarily Playgirl which featured a full face shot of the actor on the cover.

Marriage to Jennifer Aniston

Brad Pitt met Friends actress Jennifer Aniston in 1998 and married her at an enclosed wedding ceremony in Malibu on July 29, 2000. The couple were adamant that the ceremony would be a private affair and hired hundreds of guards to block out any attempts of invasion by the paparazzi. Only one media picture was ever released of the wedding. Not long after the wedding, Pitt sued Damiani International, the company which made the wedding ring he gave Jennifer Aniston, for selling replica "Brad and Jennifer" rings. According to Pitt, the ring was his design and was to be exclusive. Under the settlement reached in January 2002, Pitt will design jewelry for Damiani that Aniston will model in ads, and the company will stop selling the copies.

Their separation was announced on January 7, 2005. Aniston filed for a divorce on March 25 the same year. The divorce was finalized on October 2, 2005. The troubled marriage inspired Brad Pitt to cooperate with Steven Klein for a photoshoot which was displayed on the July 2005 edition of W magazine. The spread showed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a 1963 married couple with children who were experiencing differences in an era where he believed the importance of maintaining a "facade" was becoming complicated.[5]

Relationship with Angelina Jolie

After his separation from Aniston, Pitt began dating Angelina Jolie. The couple were quickly dubbed "Brangelina" by the media. In late 2005, Pitt accompanied Jolie twice during visits to Pakistan in her function as ambassador of UNHCR to support earthquake victims in that country. He has also been to several other countries and made numerous other donations with her.

Children

Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt

Maddox was born Rath Vibol on August 5, 2001, in the province of Kandal, Cambodia. Angelina Jolie met him in November of that year, and he was adopted four months later, on March 11, 2002. (Angelina took custody of him in Namibia, Africa). In accordance with a petition filed by Angelina, his last name was changed to Jolie-Pitt on January 19, 2002; Brad filed to legally adopt him on December 2, 2005.

Maddox’s nickname is “Mad” and Angelina has been styling his hair as a Mohawk since he was seven months old, because "he had this crazy hair that stuck straight up. I had to do something with it."[3] .He has been named the Cutest Celebrity Kid in numerous magazine polls, and was even voted People’s first “Best Dress Kid” because he worked “edgy cute.”

Shortly after his adoption, Angelina bought land in Cambodia and built a house on it, Maddox legally owns the property. She also started the “Maddox Jolie Project,” a wildlife refuge in northern Cambodia right next to her own land. She also gave him a Cambodian middle name, Chivan, which means “life” in Khmer, the native language of Cambodia. (The first name “Maddox” is Celtic, and means “beneficent.”)

Unfortunately, it was later proven that the Hawaiian facilitator of Maddox’s adoption had been buying children in Cambodia for as little as $100. However, Jolie’s case was investigated and it was determined that Maddox’s adoption was completely legal and he had not been bought from his mother.

Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt

Zahara was born Tena Adam on January 8, 2005, in Ethiopia, Africa. She was later moved to Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital, after her mother died. In June of 2005, Angelina Jolie, Brad, and Jolie’s son Maddox flew into Ethiopia twice to see her and start the adoption process; Angelina was shown Zahara and decided to adopt her, partly because her then three-year-old son, Maddox, connected with her as well: "When Maddox looked at the baby, he blew a kiss as if he was saying that was the girl who he wanted for his sister.” .[4]

Zahara was adopted on July 28, 2005, when her name was legally changed to Zahara Marley Jolie. Pitt was reportedly there when Jolie signed the adoption papers. She flew home to the United States, but was almost immediately rushed to the hospital to be treated for severe dehydration and malnutrution. Jolie stated that "she was six months and not nine pounds. Her skin, you could squeeze it, it stuck together."[5] Zahara was later released with a clean bill of health.

There were many reports after her adoption of women claiming to be Zahara’s mother and grandmother; however, Jolie took the cases to court, and judge ruled them all to be false. Jolie stated that her daughter’s mother had died of AIDS, and her birth father was unknown. Zahara does not have HIV or AIDS.

Zahara’s name means “luminous” in Arabic or “flower” in Swahili; her middle name, Marley, comes from singer Bob Marley, whom Pitt is a big fan of.

Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt

The couple’s first biological child, daughter Shiloh was born on May 27, 2006, by planned cesaerean section, in Swakopmund, Namibia, Africa. She was in a breech position. Pitt confirmed that their newly-born daughter will have a Namibian passport while speaking to local journalists.[6] Jolie decided to offer the first pictures of Shiloh through the distributor Getty Images herself, rather than allowing paparazzi to make these extremely valuable snapshots. People paid more than $4.1 million for the North American rights, while British magazine Hello! obtained the international rights for roughly $3.5 million; the total rights sale earned up to $10 million worldwide – the most expensive celebrity image of all time.[7] All profits were donated to an undisclosed charity by Jolie and Pitt.

"Angie and baby are fantastic," a source close to the couple told People on May 28. "Brad was at her side during the birth." People was also told by Namibia's Environment and Tourism Deputy Minister, Leon Jooste, that "Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt will, according to Namibian law, be allowed to obtain Namibian citizenship, if the parents should choose to do so." He added that discussion of the child's passport will be taken up with her parents "at a later stage."

Shiloh’s name means “peaceful one” in Hebrew. It was also the sight of a bloody civil war battle. Her middle name, Nouvel, comes from a favorite French architect of Pitt’s.

In September 2006 it was reported that the couple had developed a liking to the United Kingdom and were interested in setting up a base there permanently. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are rumoured to be spending up to £30million on a property in Somerford Keynes, near Cirencester, UK[6]. The couple have even expressed their love of British television soap culture, such as Emmerdale and Eastenders.

Other interests

Though reluctant to embrace celebrity status, the philanthropic Pitt has been an active supporter of research into diseases such as AIDS. Unlike many Hollywood celebrities, he has remained largely nonpartisan, working with members of both parties to help fight poverty, disease, and improve global environmental conditions. Along with U2 frontman Bono, Pitt has used his celebrity to campaign for assistance to Africa, and he is the marquee spokesman for the ONE Campaign. Brad made a strong speech at Live 8 in London in July 2005 discussing poverty and third-world debt in Africa.

Pitt appeared in a ONE Campaign commercial with TV televangelist Pat Robertson and other public figures. Brad Pitt has also traveled in 2001 overseas with several Ocean's Eleven co-stars to Turkey to visit and entertain U.S. troops.

He has also in recent months been using his star status to promote the reconstruction of New Orleans with eco-friendly materials and designs.

In the October 2006 issue of Esquire magazine, Brad Pitt expressed his support for same-sex marriage, saying that "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able." [7]

Pitt is also highly interested in architecture, and spent many years redesigning the house that he and Jennifer Aniston once owned together. Brad has studied Computer aided design and is reported to have met Frank Gehry.

He was also mentioned by Shania Twain in the song "That Don't Impress Me Much" in which she makes a reference to Brad Pitt as being the model of male perfection.
