History

The school was originally built as a grammar school in the 1960s, and was originally known as Whitley Bay Grammar School. The original buildings on site were A Block, B Block and C Block. In 1974, it became a high school.

Buildings

It has four main buildings:

  • A-Block: English, Languages, Sciences
  • B-Block: Geography, Mathematics, Philosophy, Religious Studies
  • C-Block: Childcare, Design and Technology, Food Technology, Healthcare, Sciences, Textiles
  • D-Block (built 2003): Art, Drama, Music, Sciences and the School Library

There are also several other outlying blocks (called H Block, L Block and P Block) which accommodate History, Psychology, Physical Education and Classical Civilisation.

In 2006 a major renovation of C-Block and the science labratories was completed. The new building work included two observation classrooms, with one way mirrors, so teachers can observe other lessons without disturbing students, despite the fact that this is an invasion of privacy.
