The Oraon, or Uraon, people inhabit various states across central and eastern India as well as Bangladesh. Traditionally they depended on the forest for their ritual and economic livelihood, but in recent times they have become mainly settled agriculturalists. Small numbers of Oraon have emigrated to the northeastern part of India, where they are mainly employed as labourers on tea estates.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ranchi, Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, is Oraon. Oraons are also known as "Dhangar" in many parts of India.
Culture
The Oraon language, Kurukh, belongs to the Dravidian family, and is most closely related to Brahui and Malto (Paharia).
The Oraon people have a rich and vast range of folk songs, dances and tales, as well as traditional musical instruments. Both men and women participate in dance, which are performed at social events and festivals.There are thirteen kinds of dances and songs, which performed and sung on different occasios in through out of years. Mandar, Nagara and kartal are the main instruments of Oraon.

Late Kartic Oraon, a Indian Congress leader and former state communication minister of India and The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ranchi, Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, is Oraon.

About 75 percent of population are Sarna and rest are Christians Oraon Christians have abandoned the different kinds of dances and songs, however, Karma a festival performed during rainy season is followed by them in transformed manner in church.However,Sarna performed religious rituals under the shades of Sarna (sacret place).
