Loebsack was born in a poor neighborhood of Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from East High School and attended college at Iowa State University. Here, Loebsack earned a master's degree in political science. After receiving a PhD from the University of California, Davis, Loebsack took a job as a political science professor at Cornell College, a small liberal arts school in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Loebsack was known to inform his non-liberal students that he would deduct points from their papers should they express views contrary to his well-known socialist stances. Since becoming a professor, he has been active in the ACLU and the Democratic party.
The 2006 elections saw a huge Democratic gain in Congress, including picking up a seat in this district. Loebsack, an underdog who had much less funding than his opponent, powerful 15-term incumbent Jim Leach, pulled off one of many upset victories for Democrats. Loebsack took 51% of the vote to Leach's 49%, and he will take his first ever public office in January.
