Alan Hale (attore)

Alan Hale, nome d'arte di Rufus Edward Mackahan, (Washington, 10 febbraio 1892 – Hollywood, 22 gennaio 1950), è stato un attore cinematografico e regista statunitense.

Biografia

Alan Hale, Sr. viene ricordato soprattutto come caratterista, particolarmente per i suoi ruoli alla Warner Bros. a fianco di Errol Flynn. È stato sposato per oltre trent'anni con Gretchen Hartman (1897–1979), attrice del cinema muto e madre dei loro tre figli, tra cui Alan Hale, Jr., meglio conosciuto presso il pubblico televisivo come Skipper nella serie Gilligan's Island.

Hale nacque come Rufus Edward Mackahan a Washington, D.C.. Il suo primo ruolo cinematografico fu nel 1911 in The Cowboy and the Lady, un cortometraggio western andato perso. Ricoprì il ruolo di Little John nel Robin Hood a fianco di Douglas Fairbanks e Wallace Beery, un ruolo che riprese 16 anni dopo in La leggenda di Robin Hood con Errol Flynn e Basil Rathbone e poi ancora nel 1950 in Viva Robin Hood a fianco di Robin/John Derek (un Little John di 28 anni più anziano) in quello che sarà il suo ultimo film.

Alan Hale, Sr. muore infatti a Hollywood il 22 gennaio 1950 per un'infezione virale. Viene sepolto al Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery a Glendale, California.

Tra gli altri suoi film, si ricordano: nel 1922, A Doll's House con Alla Nazimova; nel 1934, Nebbia a San Francisco, Amore tzigano (con Katharine Hepburn) e Accadde una notte con Clark Gable e Claudette Colbert; nel 1937 Amore sublime (con Barbara Stanwyck). Tra i film con Errol Flynn, Il principe e il povero, Lo sparviero del mare e Le avventure di Don Giovanni.Strada maestra (1940) con Humphrey Bogart.

Nella sua carriera interpretò ben 235 film. Da regista, diresse 8 pellicole.
