Template:Heroes character box The Haitian is a fictional character on the NBC television series Heroes, portrayed by Jimmy Jean-Louis. He is an associate of Mr. Bennet.

Character history

Template:Spoiler First seen in a bar by Matt Parkman in "One Giant Leap", the Haitian was involved in the kidnappings of Matt Parkman, Ted Sprague, Eden McCain, and Sylar, as well as the attempted kidnapping of Nathan Petrelli. He wears a necklace shaped like a strange RNA-like symbol seen throughout the series. Eden believed he was a mute.

At Bennet's command, he has "go[ne] deep" with Parkman and Sprague, then "wipe[d] out" their memories of their captures. The Haitian also followed Mr. Bennet's order to "hollow out" Brody Mitchum, a rapist who attempted to force himself on Bennet's daughter, Claire. After this encounter, Brody no longer recognized even his own name. The episode "Six Months Ago" showed that the Haitian had a hand in capturing Eden McCain, who went on to work with him and Bennet. In "Fallout", he defied Bennet's orders to erase Claire's memories, and instead talked to her, the first time in the series that he has spoken. He instead asked Claire if she "can keep a secret", indicating that he felt that it was important for her to retain her memory.

Powers and abilities

The Haitian has exhibited powerful telepathic abilities, which he uses to erase the memories of others. He admits to Claire Bennet that he has erased the memories of her friends and family, especially her mother, who has required repeated treatment. After his subjects have been treated, they do not immediately realize their memories have been erased. Although he can erase memories to varying degrees, he usually only takes away recent days. The Haitian has not exhibited any actual mind-reading or memory-creating abilities, only the ability to erase memory, leaving his subjects with no recollection of the intervening time period.

Aside from his memory-based abilities, the Haitian is also able to block or interfere with the mental powers of other superpowered individuals. In "Collision", Matt Parkman tries to read the Haitian's mind in the bar and finds only silence. Later, Matt is told by Mr. Bennet that he wouldn't be able to read his mind with the Haitian present. Despite the claim, Matt does actually manage to get Claire's name from Bennet. He is also able to do the same in "Fallout" to get Sylar's name from Bennet's mind with the Haitian present, though it requires a considerably greater amount of effort than it did the first time (he actually gave himself a nosebleed from the strain). The Haitian was also able to nullify Eden McCain's suggestive abilities during her initial capture. Unlike Matt, she showed no ability to overcome this.
