On 28 April 2020, a man named Raju was arrested on the charges of lynching two Hindu Sadhus in Pagona village in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Uttar Pradesh police are investigating the case and have said that there is no religion issue in the murder as both the murderer and the victims were Hindus.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] The UP Police said that they had to disclose the religion of the accused to avoid any religion related controversy in the incident. On 29 April, Sadhus from Mathura demanded that the murderer be hanged.[8]

Two Hindu Sadhus Sadhu Jagandas, 55-year-old, and Sevadas aged 35 years were killed on the night of 27 April inside a Shiva temple at Pagona village of Bulandshahr district.[9][10] The two sadhus had scolded a man for stealing their tongs. The man murdered the sadhus while they were sleeping in the temple premises.[11] After being arrested the man claimed the murder was the will of God.[12]

Arrest

A man named Raju, also a Hindu has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has demanded strict actions. At the time of the arrest the man was under the influence of cannabis.[1][13][14]

According to Ravindra Kumar, a senior government official, the accused had used stick to murder the sadhus. The Police said they had to disclose the religion of the accused to avoid any religion related controversy in the incident.[1]

Reactions

This incidence attracted outrage and the Uttar Pradesh government under BJP received criticism.[1][15][16]

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take strict action against the killer.[1][17]

Opposition leaders including ex-Chief Minister of UP Akhilesh Yadav, politicians Priyanka Gandhi and Sanjay Raut demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict actions in the case without politicizing the incident.[18][6][19][20] On 29 April, Sadhus from Mathura demanded that the murderer be hanged.[21]

BJP and Sangh Parivar had shown outrage over the killing of two Sadhus in 2020 Palghar mob lynching in Maharashtra. The political rivals of BJP and a section on the social media, expressed surprise on the saffron party and the Sangh parivaar not showing similar outrage, over the killing of the sadhus in Uttar Pradesh ruled by BJP's Yogi Adityanath.[16]
