2020-04-16 | Green Infrastructure for Stormwater Management | Green infrastructure is defined in the United States by section 502 of the Clean Water Act as the range of measures that use plant or soil systems, permeable surfaces, stormwater harvest and reuse, infiltrate or evapotranspirate stormwater and reduce flows to sewer systems or to surface waters. Green infrastructure encompasses various water management practices such as vegetated rooftops, absorbent gardens and other measures to capture, filter, and reduce stormwater. Green infrastructure prevents or reduces the amount of water that flows into storm drains and is proved as an important tool for cities with combined sewer overflows and nutrient problems. It provides many environmental, social, and economic benefits such as improved surface water quality, water conservation, and community safety. Green Infrastructure is a cost effective and resilient approach to managing stormwater. While gray stormwater infrastructure is designed to move stormwater away from the built environment, green infrastructure treats the water at the source. | C | Megan Geerts (40)

2020-03-21 | Wind Farms in the Sustainable Reserve of Ponta do Tubarão | The Sustainable Development Reserve of Ponta do Tubarão in Brazil was created in 2003. It was created as an aim of protecting the environment from different attempts to develop the area into a tourist resort or simple shrimp hatcheries along the mangroves. The SDR-PT covers about 12,940 sq ft of the areas off the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte in the Guamaré and Macau Municipalities. This area is considered a high-value biological region in brazil, with only little artisanal fishing and collecting shellfish, small scale agriculture, and animal farming. Since 2010 two wind turbine projects started operating in the area, known as Missaba II and Alegria II. The documentation of land operations has been in the works for more than a decade, and habitants of the area are claiming that the windmills have created water scarcity as the ponds are now dry. Other issues to the area include, the wall and line towers constructed disrupt the hydrological connection between rivers and the ocean which inherently affects the fisherman and alters water sands. Inhabitants in the area say that noise and vibrations from the wind turbines have affected animals and birds in the area that have migrated elsewhere. The council from the reserve says that part of the Missaba was built inside turtle nesting areas. Fishermen who live in the area were said to have received compensation for their interruptions, but according to sources they haven't. This project is an interesting situation as wind turbines are seen as good for the environment, yet they are destroying the area and making it inhabitable for most organisms in Ponta do Tubarão in Brazil. | C | Agrimando (26)

2020-05-18 | Blue justice | Blue Justice reflects a critical examination of how coastal communities and small-scale fisheries may be affected by blue economy and “blue growth” initiatives — initiatives that are being undertaken by institutions and governments globally to promote sustainable ocean development (see the European Commission Blue Growth initiatives, FAO blue growth initiative, and the World Bank and UNEP 2017 document on potentials of the Blue Economy). The blue economy is also rooted in the ‘green economy’ and the UN Sustainable Development Goals , underlying sustainable development globally. Blue Justice acknowledges the historical rights of small-scale fishing communities to marine and inland resources, and coastal space, as traditional users for thousands of years in some cases. Thus, as a concept, it seeks to investigate pressures on small-scale fisheries, from other ocean uses, including industrial fisheries and coastal/marine tourism, aquaculture or energy production, promoted in the blue economy and blue growth development agenda, and how it may compromise the rights and the wellbeing of small-scale fisheries and their communities. Below are definitions of Blue Justice offered by the recent academic literature. | Start | Dalyocean (43) | Past AfD |
