Caratteristiche tecniche
Terzino sinistro di spinta[3][4], abile a svolgere entrambe le fasi di gioco.[5][4] In possesso di una notevole resistenza[4], tra le sue doti spicca la precisione nel servire cross ai compagni.[6][4]
Carriera
Club
Entra nel settore giovanile del Celtic all'età di nove anni.[7] A 15 anni - dopo essere stato rilasciato dagli Hoops[8][7] - viene tesserato dal Queen's Park.[8][7] Esordisce in prima squadra il 28 luglio 2012 contro il Berwick Rangers, incontro valido per il primo turno di Scottish Challenge Cup.[9]
Il 3 giugno 2013 firma un biennale con il Dundee United.[10] Esordisce in Premiership il 2 agosto contro il Partick Thistle (0-0 il finale).[11] Alla luce delle ottime prestazioni fornite con la squadra scozzese[12], il 24 luglio 2014 firma un triennale con opzione di rinnovo con l'Hull City.[13] L'esborso economico effettuato dalla società inglese è stato di circa 3 milioni di sterline dall'Hull City.[14][13] Esordisce in Premier League il 16 agosto seguente contro il QPR alla prima giornata di campionato.[15]
Il 21 luglio 2017 passa al Liverpool in cambio di 8 milioni di sterline, più bonus a salire.[16] Esordisce con i Reds il 19 agosto contro il Crystal Palace.[17]
Nazionale
Esordisce con la nazionale scozzese il 5 marzo 2014 in un'amichevole disputata contro la Polonia, subentrando al 22' della ripresa al posto di Barry Bannan.[18] Mette a segno la sua prima rete in nazionale il 18 novembre 2014 al Celtic Park contro l'Inghilterra (3-1 a favore degli avversari).[19]
