Antefatto

A Night of Champions, Dean Ambrose torna in WWE dopo un mese d'assenza attaccando Seth Rollins, dopo che egli aveva lanciato una open challange a chiunque lo volesse affrontare. Nella stessa sera, John Cena sconfigge Brock Lesnar per squalifica in un match valido per il WWE World Heavyweight Championship a causa dell'attacco di Mr. Money in the Bank, intento ad incassare la valigetta su Lesnar, ma prima che questo accada viene messo in fuga da Cena. Nella puntata di Raw del 29 settembre, Cena e Ambrose sconfiggono Kane e Randy Orton per squalifica dopo che Rollins ha attaccato Ambrose.[1] Il 6 ottobre a Raw, Cena sconfigge Rollins, Orton e Kane in un 3-on-1 Handicap match per squalifica. Triple H annuncia che Cena affronterà Ambrose ad Hell in a Cell e il vincitore affronterà Seth Rollins più tardi nella serata in un Hell in a Cell match.[2] Nell'edizione di SmackDown del 10 ottobre, durante Miz TV, The Miz annuncia che Cena ed Ambrose si affronteranno con una stipulazione speciale, in un No Holds Barred Contract on a Pole match.[3] Nella puntata di Raw del 13 ottobre, Triple H annuncia che Cena ed Ambrose si affronteranno in serata per determinare chi dovrà affrontare Rollins al pay-per-view. Nella puntata, inoltre, Randy Orton dice a Triple H che avrà un match contro il perdente del No Holds Barred Contract on a Pole match ad Hell in a Cell. Nel Main Event, Ambrose sconfigge Cena ottenendo dunque la possibilità di affrontare Rollins.[4] La settimana successiva a Raw, HHH annuncia che Cena e Orton si affronteranno all'omonimo pay-per-view in un Hell in a Cell match per determinare il contendente numero uno al WWE World Heavyweight Championship.[5]

A SummerSlam, Nikki Bella effettua un turn heel attaccando Brie Bella, causandone la sconfitta contro Stephanie McMahon. Il 13 ottobre a Raw, Nikki interrompe l'intervista di Brie dicendo che la perdente del loro match di Hell in a Cell farà da assistente per 30 giorni alla vincitrice.[6]

Dopo aver perso l'Intercontinental Championship contro Dolph Ziggler, The Miz inizia una faida con Sheamus per lo WWE United States Championship dopo diversi tag team match. Nell'edizione di Raw del 6 ottobre, Miz sconfigge Sheamus grazie all'interferenza di Damien Mizdow.[7] Sette giorni dopo a Raw,The Miz sconfigge nuovamente Sheamus per count-out.[8] Il 14 ottobre la WWE annuncia che Sheamus difenderà il titolo di campione degli Stati Uniti dall'assalto di The Miz al pay-per-view.

Nella puntata di SmackDown del 26 settembre, Big Show batte Rusev per squalifica, dopo che questi ha colpito Show con la bandiera russa.[9] Nella puntata di Raw del 29 settembre, Big Show attacca il bulgaro e tira giù la bandiera russa da sopra il ring.[10] A SmackDown del 3 ottobre, è invece Rusev ad attaccare Show.[11] Nella puntata di Raw del 13 ottobre, Rusev sconfigge Big Show per squalifica a causa dell'intervento di Mark Henry che attacca il russo.[12] Il 14 ottobre la WWE annuncia che Big Show e Rusev si affronteranno ad Hell in a Cell.

A Night of Champions, AJ Lee sconfigge Paige per vincere il Divas Championhip in un Triple Threat match che ha incluso anche Nikki Bella. Il 29 settembre a Raw, Alicia Fox sconfigge AJ, dopo il match la Fox e Paige attaccano la Divas Champion.[13] Il 6 ottobre a Raw, Paige e Alicia Fox sconfiggono AJ ed Emma.[14] Nella puntata del 15º anniversario di SmackDown del 10 ottobre, AJ sconfigge la Fox, dopo di che viene attacca da Paige e dalla Fox per poi reagire.[15] Nella puntata di Raw del 13 ottobre, AJ Lee e Layla sconfiggono Paige e Alicia Fox nonostante il tradimento da parte di Layla nei confronti della campionessa femminile.[16] Il 17 ottobre a SmackDown, AJ sconfigge Layla, dopo il match viene attacca da Paige.[17] Il 20 ottobre viene annunciato che AJ Lee difenderà il Divas Championship dall'assalto di Paige ad Hell in a Cell.
