Abby Howland Woolsey

Abby Howland Woolsey (Alexandria, 16 luglio 1828 – New York, 7 aprile 1893) è stata un'insegnante, scrittrice e filantropa statunitense, autrice di manuali per il personale infermieristico.

Biografia

Nacque ad Alexandria (Virginia) nel 1828, primogenita di Charles William Woolsey e Jane Eliza Newton. Crebbe tra Boston e New York; studiò alla Misses Murdock’s School e quindi al Rutgers Female Institute.^[1]

Nel 1859 assistette a un’asta di schiavi a Charleston (Carolina del Sud), esperienza che la rese una convinta abolizionista.^[2]

Durante la guerra di secessione americana collaborò a New York con la Woman’s Central Association of Relief, coordinando raccolta, confezione e distribuzione di indumenti e forniture mediche per i soldati dell’Unione.^[3]

Nel 1872 operò come acting clerk al neonato Presbyterian Hospital di New York; fu poi tra le attiviste della New York State Charities Aid Association (NYSCAA).^[4] Per la NYSCAA redasse rapporti e proposte sull’organizzazione dell’assistenza e della formazione infermieristica, dopo viaggi di studio in Europa.^[5]

Visse con la sorella Jane, che assistette fino alla morte (1891). Morì a New York il 7 aprile 1893.^[6]
