Il giorno stesso della sua uscita, il disco ha ricevuto la certificazione di platino dalla Recording Industry Association of America, per aver raggiunto 1 000 000 unità vendute negli Stati Uniti d'America.[5]

Antefatti

Dopo l'uscita nel 2018 dell'album Invasion of Privacy, la rapper si è presa un periodo di pausa per concentrarsi sulla maternità e su altre forme di business, quali la televisione e la moda.[6][7]

Il 7 agosto 2020 la rapper pubblica WAP, in collaborazione con la rapper statunitense Megan Thee Stallion, che riscuote un enorme successo a livello globale, mentre il 5 febbraio 2021 rilascia Up, entrambe posizionatesi alla numero uno della classifica Billboard Hot 100.[8][9] Dopo queste pubblicazioni la rapper ha rivelato che l'album sarebbe uscito a breve, tuttavia il progetto è stato rimandato più volte, a causa del perfezionismo e della pressione relativa alle aspettative dei fan.[10]

Pubblicazione e promozione

Successivamente alla pubblicazione del suo primo album Invasion of Privacy, Cardi B ha pubblicato dodici singoli indipendenti, sia come solista sia come collaborazioni. Il primo di questi è stato Money, lanciato commercialmente sei mesi dopo la pubblicazione del suo primo album in studio.[11]

Successivamente, la rapper ha pubblicato altri singoli di successo globale, come WAP e Up, per poi tornare nel 2024 con il singolo Like What (Freestyle). Nel marzo 2024 viene pubblicato il singolo Enough (Miami), che diventa virale sulle piattaforme online e raggiunge la top 10 della Billboard Hot 100, ottenendo anche una candidatura nella categoria miglior interpretazione rap alla 67ª edizione dei Grammy Award.[12]

Dopo oltre sette anni di lavoro, due giorni dopo la pubblicazione del singolo Outside, il 22 giugno 2025 Cardi B annuncia, tramite i suoi canali social, la data di uscita del suo secondo album in studio e la copertina, annunciando anche che l'album conterrà varie collaborazioni con artisti con cui ha lavorato in precedenza, per un totale di 23 tracce, tra cui anche i precedenti singoli WAP e Up.[13] Per aver messo queste due tracce nell'album, Cardi B ha ricevuto numerose critiche e lei ha risposto tramite social media che questi due brani «hanno bisogno di una casa».[14]

Il 15 agosto 2025 pubblica il brano Imaginary Playerz.[15]

Am I the Drama? è stato accolto da recensioni perlopiù positive da parte della critica specializzata. Secondo l'aggregatore Metacritic, che assegna punteggi normalizzati su 100 tramite i giudizi formulati da critici influenti, l'album ha totalizzato 74 punti su undici recensioni, equivalenti ad «acclamazione universale».[25] Discorso analogo anche attraverso il portale AnyDecentMusic?, dove il disco ha una votazione media di 6,6 su 10 basandosi sulle recensioni della critica.[26]
