Industry plant è un termine dispregiativo[1][2][3] usato per descrivere artisti musicali percepiti di aver ottenuto popolarità per mezzo di aiuti dall'industria musicale invece che per il loro talento.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

modificaCome insulto, "Industry plant" è diretto a musicisti che trovano successo instantaneo nelle loro carriere, a prescidere dai loro talenti o meriti, e si reputano indipendenti malgrado il massiccio sostegno ricevuto dalle loro etichette discografiche.[10][11][12][13]
E' stato paragonato al "selling out".[14]
Storia
modificaIl termine "Industry plant" è presunto essere comparso nei forum hip hop nei primi anni 2010,[15][16][17] venendo utilizzato in una pagina nel 2012 per descrivere rapper come Lil Wayne, 50 Cent e Waka Flocka Flame.[18][19]
In seguito alla fama ricevuta dal singolo Bury a Friend nel 2018, Billie Eilish è stata ripetutamente accusata da alcuni utenti su YouTube e Reddit di essersi fabbricata una finta personalità da industry plant.[20][21][22]
Ice Spice, diventata popolare nel 2022 grazie al suo singolo Munch (Feelin' U), andato virale su TikTok, fu etichettata con tale termine.[23][24][25]
Critiche
