Gameplay
editCalamity adds various features to Terraria, expanding the gameplay variety and the game's progression.[5] New weapons are added, along with the Rogue character class that specializes in stealth.[6][7] Various new bosses can be encountered during different stages of progression, either by meeting a specific criteria or summoning them manually. Defeating bosses grants the player powerful items and may unlock new areas. Certain bosses are accessible only after defeating Moon Lord, the final boss of vanilla Terraria.[8][9] Bosses from the base game also receive new attacks.[10]
Calamity adds multiple biomes, which house unique enemies and bosses.[9] Certain biomes are largely inaccessible until a specific condition is met, such as the Abyss, which requires special gear to traverse, and the Astral Infection, which only spawns after the Wall of Flesh has been defeated.[11] Existing biomes receive new structures and enemies.[8][10] New materials are added, used primarily to craft various tools and weapons.[11]
Alongside the base Classic, Expert and Master modes, there are now additional optional difficulty modifiers named "Revengeance" and "Death" that change enemy and boss AI to be tougher and add new game mechanics.[10] Additionally, the mod adds new town NPCs and reworks other mechanics.[10]
Development
editAfter its initial release in 2016, Calamity has continued receiving updates that add content, tweak balance and make the mod compatible with newer versions of Terraria.
On June 23, 2022, the mod was published on the Steam Workshop page of tModLoader.[10][12]
Reception
editCalamity received acclaim, with various sources noting the amount of content the mod adds to Terraria. Prima Games stated that playing the mod is "like experiencing a completely different game".[9] GamesRadar+ described the mod as "arguably the biggest [Terraria] mod that currently exists".[13] Dot Esports stated that the mod provides "weeks of extra fun" and that it's challenging "even for Terraria veterans".[8] Game Rant stated that the mod "offers much more than standard Terraria mods", describing it as "total overhaul".[11]
The soundtrack for Calamity was also widely praised, with Opera GX ranking it as the ninth best game soundtrack of all time.[4] The mod was acknowledged by the lead Terraria developer and president of Re-Logic Andrew "Redigit" Spinks.[13]
As of 2025, the mod had over 7.5 million subscribers on Steam Workshop.[12]
