This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. Declined by Curb Safe Charmer 9 months ago. | ![]() |
Comment: This draft is written from the viewpoint of the company, focusing on what the company says about itself. Corporate notability is based on what independent reliable sources have written about the subject. Not every business corporation is notable, and this draft does not establish corporate notability. You may ask for advice about corporate notability at the Teahouse. As noted by an earlier reviewer, this draft does not speak for itself. The text of the draft does not establish that independent sources have provided significant coverage of the company. The title of this draft either has been disambiguated or will need to be disambiguated for acceptance. If the title of this draft has been disambiguated, submitters and reviewers are asked to check the disambiguated title to see if it is the most useful disambiguation, and, if necessary, rename this draft. If this draft is accepted, the disambiguation page will need to be edited. Either an entry will need to be added, or an entry will need to be revised. Please do not edit the disambiguation unless you are accepting this draft. The disambiguation page for the primary name is Solidus. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:24, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
Comment: Article doesn't Wikipedia:Speak for Itself - unclear why there should be an entry about the company in an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a directory of companies.Mostly sourced to press releases.Author has not complied with the mandatory paid editing declaration requirements. Solidus is a packaging company headquartered in Groningen, Netherlands, that manufactures fibre-based packaging for sectors including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and industrial goods. The company operates across Europe and uses a circular production process by recycling recovered paper into new packaging materials.
History
editSolidus traces its origins to 1870 in the northern Netherlands, where it began producing cardboard from straw, a by-product of local grain farming.[1] Over time, the company shifted to using recovered paper as its primary raw material. This shift corresponded with broader changes in the industry, including the growth of larger international packaging manufacturers.[2][3][4]
Key developments in the company’s history include:
2005: Jefferson Smurfit (Ireland) and Kappa Packaging (Netherlands) merged to form Smurfit Kappa Group.[5]
2015: Aurelius Group acquired Smurfit Kappa’s solid board operations in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK, establishing Solidus Solutions.[2][6]
2018: Solidus Solutions acquired Abelan Board Industrial, a Spanish manufacturer of core board and packaging products.[2]
2019: Centerbridge Partners, a private equity firm, acquired Solidus Solutions from Aurelius.[7]
2023: The company rebranded as Solidus to reflect its commitment to circular packaging solutions.[8]
Operations
editSolidus operates several production facilities in Europe, including paper mills in the Netherlands and Spain. The company uses recycled paper as raw material to produce fibre-based packaging.[2]
Products
editSolidus manufactures packaging intended to be recyclable and to fit within circular economy practices. These include modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), skin packaging, and fibre-based punnets that offer alternatives to traditional plastic trays in the fresh food sector. Solidus also provides packaging for industrial, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, where specific protection and durability are required.[2][9]
Sustainability
editSolidus is a member of the 4Evergreen Alliance, which aims to reach a 90% recycling rate for fibre-based packaging by 2030.[10] The company processes around 500,000 tonnes of recovered paper annually, with more than 85% of its packaging being recycled after use.[9][11] It also uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials and has introduced technologies such as anaerobic wastewater treatment and photovoltaic energy systems in several of its facilities to improve environmental performance.[9][12][13]
To meet increasing demand for sustainable packaging and comply with regulations on single-use plastics, Solidus has invested in expanding its converting capacity in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. These investments focus on improving recyclability and reducing packaging waste.[12][14]
Innovation and recognition
editIn 2016, Solidus introduced a solid board packaging material containing tomato plant fibres, developed for applications in the fresh produce sector. The material was recognised with the Packaging Europe Sustainability Award in the bio-based packaging category.[15][16]
In 2025, the Solidus facility in Coevorden was awarded the “VNP Energiebokaal” by the Royal Association of Dutch Paper and Board Manufacturers (VNP) for achieving the highest CO₂ reduction per tonne of product in the sector in 2024, including both direct and indirect emissions. The site’s transition to renewable biomass energy contributed to this result and led to CarbonNeutral® certification.[17][18]
