Istituito nel 1967[2], è amministrato dalla Foundation for Australian Literary Studies (FALS) dell'Università James Cook e riconosce al vincitore un premio di 50000 dollari australiani[3].
Prende il nome dal fondatore del riconoscimento, lo scrittore e accademico Colin Roderick (1911-2000)[4] e da sua moglie Margaret[5].
