Essa è stata criticata per le sue pratiche di editoria predatoria.^[4][5][6] Al 2019, pubblicava 430 riviste in varie discipline.^[7]

SPG utilizza un modello di pubblicazione gold open-access, che prevede il pagamento da parte degli autori. L'azienda sostiene che gli articoli siano sottoposti a revisione paritaria prima della pubblicazione.^[8] All'ottobre 2022, la maggior parte delle sue riviste non aveva un caporedattore scientifico.

Critiche

L'azienda è stata criticata per la sua politica editoriale OA predatoria.^[4][5][6]

In un esperimento, la professoressa universitaria di economia Fiona McQuarrie ha inviato un articolo alla rivista International Journal of Astrophysics and Space Science edita dalla Science Publishing Group, utilizzando gli pseudonimi “Maggie Simpson” e “Edna Krabappel” (personaggi della serie animata I Simpson). Sebbene l'articolo fosse stato generato dal programma informatico SCIgen e fosse privo di senso, è stato accettato per la pubblicazione..^[9]

Il bibliotecario Jeffrey Beall, creatore di un elenco di editori predatori ad accesso libero, cita un articolo senza senso pubblicato sull'American Journal of Applied Mathematics, contenente una presunta prova del karma buddista.^[1]

Science Publishing Group è stato anche citato più direttamente come rivista predatoria e per truffa, utilizzando più di 200 pseudo-pubblicazioni come l'American Journal of Applied Mathematics o l'International Journal of Transportation Engineering and Technology.^[1][10]

Per ingannare studiosi ignari, l'editore utilizza tecniche legate alle truffe come lo spam o inviti a pubblicare a pagamento.^[11][12]
