Typography

edit

This template is currently a shorthand for {{angle bracket|{{IPA|...}}}}. However for typographical reasons I would prefer to have a shorthand for {{IPA|{{angle bracket|...}}}}, so browsers will attempt to use angle brackets that display in the same style as the symbol they enclose. (On my system different fonts are used for IPA and other text.) Love —LiliCharlie (talk) 21:36, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

I also wondered which would have been better. I just followed what was overwhelmingly dominant—{{angle bracket|{{IPA|...}}}} was used in more than 400 articles while only 4 articles had {{IPA|{{angle bracket|...}}}}—but now it's one template, a transition should be easy. I too find the latter a more logical choice (we enclose square brackets and slashes in {{IPA}} after all), but maybe ask WT:LING before implementing it. Nardog (talk) 10:52, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I just posted about it there.  – Kilvin the Futz-y Enterovirus (talk) 18:46, 12 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
