Template talk:Talkback

ts parameter formatting

edit

Hi! I would like to know if it is generally acceptable to write the following in the ts field (after ts = ):

by ~~~ at ~~~~~

I did this at User talk:146.199.119.203 (in this edit) to avoid having something like the following (gramatically incorrect) example occur:

Message added 00:00 Noah Kastin (talk)

(This would be generated by writing ~~~~ in the ts field, which was what I had been doing until I thought of the proposed way of formatting the ts signature.)

If anyone has any thoughts on whether this is acceptable or not, please let me know.

Thanks!

New Section now Add Topic

edit

I think the graphic in the Usage section is outdated. It shows a graphic of the text "New Section" (New section small.png), but I think the Wikipedia interface now says "Add Topic".--papageno (talk) 04:27, 19 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your Rules

edit

Of course I know your rules and I follow them whenever possible. However, you don’t follow your own rules, true conflict of interest is pervasive throughout Wikipedia. But when I want to correct misinformation or add some true data, you throw me under the bus. Then when I complain, passionately, you blame me instead of hearing me and my concerns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.18.50.3 (talk) 21:32, 14 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

What's the difference with the {{reply to|User1|User2|... tempate ?

 1. . Talkback is only capable to talk back to 1 person even if you want to talk back to 3 people discussing in a section?
 2. . With {{reply to|User1|User2|... it is possible to reply to multiple people, so why still using the Talkback template?

You can remove this notice at any time

edit

Yes, we already know as we can do that to anything. You have the new message notification, and then below that in small text, it's "You can remove this notice at any time by removing the Talkback or Tb template." Do we really need this part? Who here removes a talkback notice on their talk page when they read their talkback and removed it? Sure it's in the revision history, but who goes to their revision history to find an old talkback? If you do, it would take forever. This is the most useless part of the template. replyto Can I Log In's (talk) page 18:10, 10 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

1976 Datsun 280Z was rated at SAE 182 HP.

edit

The 1977 Datsun 280Z was de-tuned with re-ground camshaft, loser compression and a gear reduction started. I worked at the dealer during the 70’s and owned a 1976 Datsun 280Z. They where into training so much that they had a mobile van with parts, cut-a-ways, books and power point presentations. In July, 1979, any vehicle produced after this point was equipped with a catalytic converters for unleaded. I current own a 1969 Datsun Roadster, Model SPL-311 that used the 1.6L pushrod engine and the badge was 1600. While a 2.0L overhead camshaft was the 2000 called the Fairlady. The styling cues where used to produce the 240Z. Remove the edit page

edit

Currently the template has the text "you can remove this notice" and "remove this notice" is a link to edit the page. I speculate that it is this link that is sending some users to this talk page instead of back to the other user's talk page. I would suggest removing that link from the template, so that the only link generated is to the talk page. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 07:55, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Improvements

edit

This template assumes that the only messages you can leave someone are on someone's talkpage, which is obviously untrue. It doesn't understand interwiki prefixes like :meta:.

I want to be able to just do

Which should then link to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_Research_Best_Practices_Around_Privacy_Whitepaper

Can't we just simplify the entire thing to something like:

example code
{{#if:{}
|{{#if:{}
| <span style="margin:0;padding-top:3px;"> Hello. You have <span style="font-weight:bold">a new message</span> waiting for you.</span>
|{{umbox
 | image = Nuvola apps edu languages.svg
 | imagelink = {}|You have new messages
 | text = Hello, . You have new messages at {}.
 }}
}}
|<span class="error">ERROR: Please enter a link parameter when using this template - thus Talkback.</span>
}}

It only needs to surround the first parameter with and . I don't see the point of all this extra fluff, which has, in my view, made the template less useful not more.

My suggestion is changing all that complicated stuff to: "You have new messages at {}". Polygnotus (talk) 07:58, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

We do have Interwiki talkback but it would be nice if the better known Talkback could also be used. It accepts a username alone and automatically puts "User talk:" in front so the simple {} would break many existing uses. The template uses to detect a namespace at the English Wikipedia and omits "User talk:" in that case, but it doesn't detect interwiki links. Is interwiki link could be used for this. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:32, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Primefac: did the last update 5 years ago so it may be time for a update. Templates are one of the few technical areas of Wikipedia I haven't explored yet. Polygnotus (talk) 10:04, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If Interwiki talkback works for the OP's purpose, this template probably does not need any changes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:15, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
There is no need to have 2 templates for the same goal, especially not when 1 is super obscure (56 transclusions vs 64.704), and the more popular one can easily be improved so that it handles the functionality of both. Polygnotus (talk) 13:23, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If it is easy for you to add this feature, please do so at Template:Talkback/sandbox. Make sure to create testcases that show tests for all existing parameters to ensure that they do not stop working. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:58, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jonesey95 I'm not the type to ask for help if I can easily do it myself. Polygnotus (talk) 09:00, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, if there is a template that does what someone wants, then we do not need to change this template; if folks think that we shouldn't have that other template, then get a consensus here to get it merged, and if that doesn't work then send it to TFD to get a wider audience. Primefac (talk) 09:19, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Primefac It doesn't tho. It has the same problems as the Talkback template that you can't just use any arbritary page, it has to be a user talkpage. Which means it doesn't work if you want to refer to let's say, the Teahouse, or ANI, or something else not on a user talkpage. And it doesn't support interwiki prefixes. Polygnotus (talk) 09:22, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then use a different one, like Discussion notice or please see? I was not specifically referring to Interwiki talkback in my reply; there are other templates that do what you want, and if you want them all to be in this template then a consensus must be found to do so. Sometimes that can be managed on a template's talk page, other times it requires a TFD (or in this case, TFM). Primefac (talk) 22:40, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Happy to update things if there's a consensus. Will keep an eye on this talk page for now. Primefac (talk) 09:19, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
We don't need a consensus when it is an obvious improvement with no downsides. We can just use Is interwiki link and the existing template is improved and its also backwards compatible. Polygnotus (talk) 09:24, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
To clarify, then: are you no longer proposing the change that you wrote previously, and proposing a different one? isaacl (talk) 15:00, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Isaacl Yep. Polygnotus (talk) 15:01, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Dropping existing functionality would break backwards compatibility for previous uses. Unfortunately, the testcases don't seem to cover all parameters supported by the template, nor are they all documented. Changes should either continue to support the existing parameters, or be part of a deployment plan on how to remove support without breaking current uses, if any. isaacl (talk) 17:19, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
A testcases page is not fixed. Testcases may be added where they are missing - indeed, must be added where a new parameter is proposed. That's the point: to test the new setup alongside the old. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:32, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure; I didn't say the testcases page couldn't be changed. I was only commenting on its current state, and thus the need for it to be updated. isaacl (talk) 09:56, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
To return to the original post: This template assumes that the only messages you can leave someone are on someone's talkpage, which is obviously untrue. This itself is demonstrably untrue, since the link in this notice brings you straight to this section here. It's only the interwiki prefix that is not supported. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:54, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh man normally when I post on a template talkpage no one responds.   I was thinking about making something better, a template that would accept both an URL or a wikilink, but then I got bored and distracted. If I ever figure out an ingenious solution that supports bare urls, (inter)wikilinks and is backwards compatible I'll let y'all know. Polygnotus (talk) 09:58, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks. For the record, in order to capture what was happening with a given revision you have to subst it, or capture the ExpandTemplates output from the pasted source of the revision in question. I think I did the latter in this case, but don't recall anymore. Mathglot (talk) 17:06, 14 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
