See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

edit
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

NEW NOMINATIONS

edit

Category:American folk musical groups

edit
Nominator's rationale: Several categories out of phase with their tree. The base category is Category:Folk music groups, and most of their country-level siblings in Category:Folk music groups by nationality are named the same way, but this set is at "musical" instead of music. But the tree should be consistent so that the ___location of any category is readily predictable, so these should be named the same way as the others. Category:China orchestras

edit
Nominator's rationale: Category out of phase with its siblings in Category:Orchestras by nationality, but with a significant problem because the expected name is already in use for a variant purpose (which is why I can't just speedy it).
All other country-level siblings are at "[Demonym] orchestras" (American, British, Canadian, French, etc.) rather than "[Country name] orchestras", with not a single other exception that I've located (except New Zealand, where the country name is the demonym and thus isn't really an exception) -- but in this case, the demonym is instead being used for orchestras anywhere in the world that perform Chinese music in the genre sense of the term, thus pushing the category for orchestras based in China to an outlier form instead of the standard one.
However, it's an important principle of the category system that the category names need to be as consistent and predictable as possible, to minimize confusion and misfiling -- so the category for Chinese-music-as-a-genre ensembles needs to be at a different name, so that the category for orchestras based in China can be named the same way as its sibling categories for other countries are. Category:Alumni by university or college

edit
Nominator's rationale: Or Category:University or college alumni. While the current name of this category (with "by") appears to be correct at first glance, examining its contents reveals that the current name is misleading. Instead of expected sorting of alumni by university or college, it contains, primarily, sorting of university and college alumni by continent, plus three semi-random sorting categories. As it is not a sorting "by university or college", but just a conceptually higher level category - the top category for all alumnis of universities as colleges (as opposed to alumnis of other types of institutions, such as high schools or fellowships), a name change is in order, with no prejudice to such category being recreated when it contains, as the name would suggest, sorting of alumnis by, well, university or college. Note that the name change I propose would also alignt it with the current wikidata. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:12, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Players of Australian rules football

edit
Nominator's rationale: More natural and other subcategories of Category:Players of Australian rules football already use the proposed format. The current format makes sense for the subcategories of Category:Players of Australian rules football by nationality, because it avoids awkward constructs like "Australian Australian rules footballers", but for categories without nationalities, no such issues exist and Australian at the start isn't likely to cause confusion. Category:Gaelic footballers is comparible. Mclay1 (talk) 06:12, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Timelines of Australia by state

edit
Nominator's rationale: merge, only 1 or 2 articles in each category, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:49, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Neoplasms

edit
Nominator's rationale: rename, most subcategories in Category:Types of neoplasia use "neoplasia" instead of "neoplasms". I have not listed this at speedy because I am also keeping into account that the renaming might need to be the other way around. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:45, 1 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
