AFSC/RACE/FBEP/Laurel: Effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbance on polychaete worm tubes and age-0 flatfish distribution

Metadata Updated: April 1, 2024

This dataset is from a field experiment that examined how juvenile flatfish distribution changed with worm tube heterogeneity, i.e. density and patchiness.

Lineage Field work was conducted in the coastal water embayment of Pillar Creek Cove, Kodiak Island, Alaska, a summer nursery area for age-0 rock sole and Pacific halibut. Video surveys of age-0 flatfish and worm tubes were conducted using a towed camera sled. The camera sled was deployed along 8 transects (~250 m long) that ran across depth strata (10-30 m depth span) perpendicular to the shoreline. After an initial survey of the 8 transects, 4 of the 8 transects were subjected to a series of passes with a simulated trawl footrope incorporating heavy chain and trawl doors. The transects were resurveyed several times to follow changes in worm tube and flatfish distributions. Polychaete worm tube characteristics (density, patchiness, combing) and age-0 flatfish densities were scored during video playback.
