The HDF EOS Tools and Information Center has a webpage with example code for various NSIDC data sets - http://hdfeos.org/zoo/index_openNSIDC_E ... .php#MODIS. This webpage also contains some more generic example code for using HDF in MATLAB - https://www.hdfeos.org/examples/index.php.
